Their adoption process

Our adoption process is designed to be simple, straightforward, and highly organized. Much of the process is system-guided, allowing applicants and adopters to move through each step smoothly as long as they carefully read the information provided, follow instructions, and complete required steps.

We hold two private adoption events and two public events each month at Pet Supply Plus in Lake in the Hills Illinois. Our public events are opportunities to meet our organization; we do not conduct open or walk-up adoptions. Every adoption must proceed through our established approval and contractual process.

We place a strong emphasis on education, preparation, and continued adopter support. Our adopters receive extensive educational materials covering transition, decompression, routine care, behavior, medical concerns, and other important aspects of bringing a new animal home.

Every adoption is governed by comprehensive contractual documents designed to clearly establish the responsibilities and protections of both the adopter and our organization.

We also provide a 14-day post-adoption medical oversight period, during which qualifying medical concerns are handled in accordance with our contractual medical provisions. Our agreements also contain clearly defined refund provisions and protections for circumstances specifically outlined within the adoption contract.

Our goal is not simply to place an animal in a home. We work to give adopters the information, preparation, resources, and support needed to help create a safe and successful lifelong placement.

Go meet their pets

Tails operates differently from a traditional shelter or walk-in adoption facility. We are a small, foster-based organization, and our animals are cared for throughout an extensive foster network rather than housed together in one public location.

Because of this, we do not offer individual meet-and-greets, walk-in visits, or individual adoption pickups.

Instead, Tails uses a careful matching process. We know the animals in our program extremely well and thoroughly screen our applicants. Our goal is to match each animal with an approved family whose home, lifestyle, experience, and circumstances are appropriate for that animal's individual needs.

PRIVATE ADOPTION EVENTS

Adoptions are completed through our scheduled private adoption events, generally held every two at Pet Supplies Plus in Lake in the Hills, Illinois.

These private events allow our small team to coordinate animals coming from throughout our foster network and bring everyone together at one scheduled location and time.

Once an adoption is approved, reserved, and ready for completion, the adopter is scheduled for the appropriate private adoption event and provided with the necessary event information and instructions.

This is our established adoption and pickup process. We do not arrange separate meet-and-greets or individual pickups outside of our scheduled adoption events.

PUBLIC EVENTS

Tails also generally participates in two public events each month at Pet Supplies Plus in Lake in the Hills.

Our public events are primarily for community outreach, education, rescue awareness, and showcasing adoptable animals. Animals attending these events may be met by the public, but these are not open adoption events, and animals are not adopted or released to walk-in visitors.

All of our available animals can be viewed online, and anyone interested in adopting must complete our established application and approval process.

WE MATCH OUR ANIMALS WITH THEIR FAMILIES ❤️

Tails is not a traditional shelter where visitors walk through rows of kennels, select an animal, and take that animal home.

Our team and fosters spend significant time caring for and getting to know the animals in our program. We consider temperament, energy level, household environment, other animals, children, lifestyle, experience, and the individual needs of each animal when reviewing potential placements.

Our goal isn't simply to complete an adoption. Our goal is to make the right match and create a safe, successful, lifelong placement.

TAILS DOES NOT CONDUCT OPEN OR SAME-DAY ADOPTIONS.

More about this rescue

Tails of the Forgotten Paws Inc. is a full-service, legitimate NO-KILL animal rescue and sanctuary with more than 29 years of experience in animal rescue and welfare.

We are a bit of a jack-of-all-trades within the animal welfare community. We rescue, rehabilitate, provide medical care, facilitate adoptions, operate foster programs, and provide lifelong sanctuary care.

Tails has always had a special place for the animals who need someone the most.

We specialize in helping medically needy, neglected, abused, abandoned, misunderstood, and difficult-to-place animals, including dogs who have been labeled "unadoptable" or given up on because of behavioral, medical, age-related, or other challenges.

Our Arkansas sanctuary provides care for senior and hospice animals, as well as sanctuary for troubled or misunderstood dogs who may not be appropriate for traditional adoption.

We don't measure an animal's worth by how easy they are to adopt. Some simply need more time, more medical care, more understanding, or a safe place to call home for the rest of their lives.

WHEN YOU ADOPT, YOU SAVE TWO LIVES

When you adopt from Tails, you are truly rescuing an animal in need.

Many of the animals who come through our doors have faced circumstances in which their futures were uncertain. Your adoption doesn't only change the life of the animal you take home. It opens a space for another animal waiting for rescue, medical care, safety, and a second chance.

By adopting, you help us say YES to the next innocent life waiting for help.

ARKANSAS + ILLINOIS

Tails maintains licensing and operations in Arkansas and Illinois, with each location serving an important role in our mission.

Arkansas is home to our sanctuary facility, where we provide hands-on rescue, rehabilitation, medical and long-term sanctuary care.

Illinois is the primary home of our adoption and foster program and our primary adoption working area. Our Illinois program is foster-based, allowing animals to experience life in a home environment while awaiting their permanent families.

We also welcome qualified out-of-state applicants. Approved applicants must be able to travel to our Illinois working area to complete pickup. We do not deliver adopted animals to individual adopters.

We generally hold two private adoption events and two public events each month in our Illinois working area.

Our private adoption events provide scheduled pickups for approved adopters and fosters. Public events provide opportunities to meet Tails, learn more about our organization, and meet participating animals.

Our primary Illinois meeting and pickup location is Pet Supplies Plus in Lake in the Hills, Illinois. Event information and specific instructions are provided directly to approved participants.

IMPORTANT: TAILS DOES NOT DO OPEN ADOPTIONS

Animals are not adopted on the spot at public events.

Every prospective adopter must complete our established application, screening, approval, educational, and contractual process before an animal may be released.

Our process is designed to protect our animals, prepare our adopters, and give every placement the strongest possible foundation for becoming a safe, successful, lifelong home.

At Tails, our work doesn't end when an animal leaves our hands. Rescue is the beginning. A successful lifetime placement is the goal.
