Name: Blackie
Breed: Lab Mix
Age: 6 years
Sex: Female
Weight: 62lbs
Medical Needs: None
Housebroken: Yes! No accidents in the house or crate. She goes to the door when she needs to go out.
Crate Trained: Yes and quiet unless she needs to go potty.
Good in the car: Yes but I recommend tethering her or she would prefer to be in your lap. Otherwise she looks out the window or lays down.
Good on Leash: She walks beautifully on a leash with a prong collar. Without it, she gets excited and pulls. She is VERY strong.
Energy Level: Typical lab energy. Go! Go! Go! Once her energy bank is completed, she’s ready to settle and snuggle. She loves to lay across you for belly rubs!
Need fenced yard: Not necessary but would love one to burn off energy and play fetch.
Dog Friendly: Yes but no small dogs. She would prefer furrriends that are her size or larger with slow introductions. Although she seems to be indifferent to their presence. She is more interested in people and toys.
If yes, does she need another dog in the home: No.
Cat Friendly: Unknown. However, she watches feral cats in my neighborhood intently. I would not recommend a home with cats or other small animals.
Kid Friendly: Yes. She is fostered with a 10 year old and has loved children of all ages at adoption events.
If yes, what age: Any with supervision. She does jump and it is very gentle most of the time (like a hug) but due to her size she could easily and accidently scratch or knock over a little.
Special traits that others should know:
Blackie came from a Georgia “Rescue” whose founder and director was charged with aggravated animal cruelty. She lived for years in an outdoor run in horrendous conditions. We do believe she was once an indoor pet who was loved and cared for.
Although her past was terrible, her future is bright. She LOVES people! She is super smart! Since her arrival in November 2024, she has learned 10 new commands (Come, sit, wait, kennel, off, down, back, load, speak and high five). She is eager to please and loves to learn new things. We are currently working on roll over.
She has learned over time that she can relax in a home environment but needs a family who will understand her cues when she is overstimulated and will give her space to “reset” as needed. She thrives on routine. She is generally quiet unless she hears an unfamiliar, startling sound, can see you while crated or needs to go potty.
In Blackie’s world balls are life! She lives and breathes to play fetch. Not only does she bring it back, she drops it right at your feet or in your hand. Blackie is crate trained and sleeps and eats in her crate. No accidents in her crate or in the house. She is gentle natured, takes treats softly, and adores children. Once she warms up to you, her bright, silly and sweet personality shines bright. She wants nothing more than to love and be loved. It’s hard to believe she has been with GRR for almost a full year. Her perfect family would be an active one, who enjoys spending time outside and will continue her training with leash pulling, recall and jumping.
