Meet Winter – The Chihuahua who doesn’t know she needs you.
Are you looking for a dog who will love you instantly, sit in your lap and cuddle sweetly, come when you call, stare lovingly into your eyes and gently kiss your nose?
Yeah… that’s not this one.
Winter came from a hoarding situation, so she missed the class on How to Dog 101. She’s kind of… let’s say… socially awkward and deeply suspicious. She thinks companionship is unnecessary, affection is a scam, and the floor is lava unless she decides otherwise.
She’s not broken—just running on some “alternative software.” She possesses the independence of an aloof cat and the stubbornness of a Bassett hound, wrapped up in the tiny body of a Chihuahua that’s bursting with trust issues. This little 15-pound gremlin is all flight and no fight, and those little legs can take her fast and far, so you better hold onto that leash tight.
What she’s into:
~Dodging you
~Clutching her pearls with offense and judgment
~Side-eyeing you like you just stole her credit card
~Redefining “personal space”, think big!
~Doing absolutely nothing you asked her to do, unless it’s her idea
~Slowly, very slowly, realizing some humans have tasty treats, but not all treats are good enough
~Leash walks are her jam, just face forward and don’t look at her
What she’s not into:
~Fast friendships
~Being touched, picked up, looked at or approached without her express permission, which she won’t give you
~Normal dog things (fetch? kisses? toys? puppy play dates? Pass.)
Is she good with other dogs and cats in the home? Like her feelings about you, she couldn’t care less about other pets, as long as no one is trying to eat her or run her over.
With time, patience, and a sense of humor, she’ll learn the world isn’t so scary. If you adopt her, and her trust issues, eventually, you’ll probably earn the rarest prize of all: her very reluctant affection (no guarantees).
Apply today if you’re ready to love a dog who isn’t ready to love you, but is super cute, deserves better than the hand she was dealt in life, and might one day think you’re alright.
Every dog deserves a home! Winter is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped.
***You must be at least 25 years of age to adopt from Canine and Kitties Rescue***
The adoption fee for this dog is $375.00, which helps with the cost of routine vet care.
***Please note that our first step in approving adoption applicants is to complete a vet check. Vetting of current and past pets is very important to us, thus we will be speaking with the vet(s) listed on your application to ensure that your current and previous pet(s) are kept up to date on vaccines (including rabies), spayed or neutered, maintained on appropriate monthly preventatives and examined annually by your vet.***
Our organization cannot guarantee the exact breed of any animal in our care. The breed listed is based on any background we may have been provided, and/or the general appearance of the animal.
**Please visit www.caninesandkittiesrescue.org to complete our non-binding application.**

More about this rescue
Canines & Kitties Rescue is an animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing homeless, neglected, and abandoned dogs, puppies, cats and kittens at risk of euthanasia. Our mission is to rescue animals from local and out of state open-admission, high-intake shelters. Our volunteers are experienced in animal care, proper placement and provide assistance to our animals throughout the foster journey, adoption process and beyond. All animals are cared for in our network of volunteer foster homes.
Our volunteer rescuers work with local veterinarians, foster homes, and trainers to provide foster based homes, medical care and training for our animals until she/he is placed in a loving, carefully screened new home. We are dedicated to helping dogs and cats of all breeds and ages including the older, sick, and injured animals as well as the readily adoptable. We have a special spot in our hearts for pregnant unwanted animals and strive to find them a safe foster home to birth and raise their young. We are advocates for spay and neuter and that each animal we rescue will be spayed and neutered at an appropriate age.
Canines & Kitties Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are an exclusively 100% volunteer based, foster-based rescue with our foster network spanning Northern VA, MD, and DC.
