My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Joel’s idea of exercising is holding the wheel down.
Joel was a local stray that came to the shelter. After testing it was found that he was something called a double positive- FIV/FeLv.
Joel has a tipped ear and looks to have been someone’s outside cat at one point. He was chipped with no registration to a company or organization. He isn’t all the engaging with humans but isn’t an outside candidate due to his FIV/FeLv status. Other felines are definitely his speed! You can find his cuddling with others, when he isn’t sleeping on the wheel.
What is FeLv?
What is FeLV?
The technical name is Feline Leukemia Virus. Like FIV it can weaken the cat’s immune system and shorten their life.
Is FeLV contagious to other cats?
Yes it is! It’s easily transmissible between cats by saliva - grooming each other, sharing the same dishes. Cats that are positive are looking for a home with no other felines. They are able to live with other animals such as dogs.
**There’s a vaccine that may help the current cat in the home but you would need to reach out to your veterinary to discuss this.
Best placement for FeLV kitties?
•Someone able to keep the cat indoors only
•Taken to regular checkups - maybe even more than normal
What is FIV?
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
FIV is an auto immune disorder. Cats affected with this virus often are unable to fight off illnesses as well as cats that are not positive.
How do cats get the virus?
FIV spreads among cats is through bite wounds or from mom. These are typically pretty aggressive fights.
•Can FIV and non FIV live together?
Studies have shown the cats can live together without transferring the disease. This is at the owners discretion and we ask for you to do your homework.
Can people or dogs get FIV?
No! They can live with other animals just fine.
Unfortunately with Joel being a double positive it could limit his life even more. But we feel he still deserves the chance at happiness and to live a life like any other kitty.
Stop by to see him today!
