My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello everyone, I'm Rusty in Warrenton, VA! I am a 1 and 1/2 year old miniature Australian Shepherd and I have the craziest, most beautiful blue eyes! I came into ASF on Christmas Eve because my family could not care for me anymore. I am neutered and up to date on vaccines and preventatives.

I am truly the sweetest boy! I am a mini and weigh in at about 29 pounds, so I'm a very manageable size. I am young and FULL of energy, so I love to run! I love to fetch and chew on toys, and I'll never tire of chasing a ball. Every morning and evening my foster mom plays fetch with me for about 15 minutes so I can sprint out my energy. I love to play with other dogs and run laps with my foster sister, so I really need a yard where I can stretch my legs. I love to walk on a leash, thouh I'm still learning not to pull when I see a squirrel or another person or dog. It's just because I want to play with them!

My favorite thing to do is nibble on my foster sister's ear or feet so she will wrestle with me. I will play for hours if I can! Sometimes my foster sisters bark at me because they are tired of playing, and I'm learning how to back off and respect their boundaries. I have never been tested with cats, but one of my foster sisters is a yorkie and I try to herd her, so I probably would try to herd cats too. I have a strong prey drive.

I love people, all people and kids! When I see them I want to jump up and hug them, and I'm working with my foster mom on how to simmer down my enthusiasm a bit. I believe I am a lap dog and I love to snuggle on laps, so I need humans who love this about me.

I don't have a mean or aggressive bone in my body. I love treats, but I don't resource guard either, and if you try to take toys or treats from me I'm fine with that because I love you! I'm known to sleep on my kid humans (ages 10 and 7) or my foster parents. I greet all guests with excitement because they all love me and I love them! I even love the vet, and make my rounds to ensure I say hi to everyone there. I am instantly popular with everyone I meet - they just fall in love with me.

I do not really bark ever, and I am fully crate trained. I sleep in a crate at night next to my foster mom, but if she'd let me I'd snuggle in bed with her. I love riding in the car too, and I behave in the car without a crate. I also know how to sit and shake for treats!

I am a typical velcro dog, and I'm happiest when I am right next to my people. They haven't tested it, but I probably wouldn't run away even if they took off my leash, because I'm obseessed with my people. My foster mom leaves me out in the house with my foster sisters when she leaves, and I'm a good boy who just sleeps with them while she's gone at work, or observe things out the window.

I am looking for a family who wants all the best traits of an Aussie! I am the most loyal, loving boy, and all I want to do is snuggle and play. I'm super smart and trainable, and I love all people and animals. I definitely need to exercise every day, but as long as I get that, I settle down nicely and I'm a great, relaxing boy.
