Meet Millie – The Comeback Dog Who Sparked a Movement
Millie is the dog who set our rescue wheels into motion! She’s not just a survivor; she’s the inspiration behind Second Start Rescue and the spark for a movement none of us saw coming.
When Millie was found, she was locked behind a deadbolted gate, with a massive lump on her side, no hair, and looking as pitiful as could be. What we didn’t realize was that she was also critically anemic, just days away from death. At the time, our rescue hadn’t even been formed yet, but the community rallied together to get Millie the urgent veterinary care she needed. Thousands of dollars were raised, and a lifesaving blood transfusion saved her. Her resilience inspired everyone to jump back into rescue, and Second Start Rescue was born!
Today, Millie looks like a completely new dog. Her coat has grown in beautifully, her energy is back, and she’s full of life. She’s thriving with her foster family in Delaware and after at least a year battling a stubborn UTI, Millie is finally bacteria free! Many know Millie becuase of her 'sack' that was frankly enormous! We are so happy to share that Millie's sack has shrunk significantly and poses no threat to her health!
Millie is a wonderful girl who loves her people! Her foster truly believes her only flaw is that she barks at strangers in her home/yard. When we are out and about she could care less! We are working on this through obedience training. Millie is a smart lady and we have no doubt she will continue to show us just what an AMAZING DOG she is! She’s a symbol of hope and second chances, and now she’s ready for her own.

More about this rescue
Since 2017, our dedicated team of volunteers has rescued thousands of dogs, focusing on giving second chances to the injured, abandoned, and overlooked. Building on years of experience under a different organization, Second Start Rescue is a new start that strengthens our commitment to saving lives and expanding our impact.
Second Start Rescue was co-founded by Jennifer Aufdenberg and a team of animal advocates and supporters who share a passion for animal welfare. As a co-founder of Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue (SSR), Jennifer and a dedicated group of individuals helped rescue over 3,500 dogs, primarily shepherds, from high-kill shelters and difficult circumstances. This work in SSR laid the foundation for a community of supporters and volunteers dedicated to giving dogs a second chance at life.
Our mission centers on rescuing and rehabilitating dogs from the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas, an area with one of the highest rates of animal abandonment in the country. While shepherds are our primary focus, we extend our care to any dog in critical need, prioritizing those who face the greatest challenges.
With Second Start Rescue, we’re doubling down on our efforts to address the root causes of animal homelessness. Our goals include implementing spay and neuter programs, offering community outreach and education, and providing compassionate care to every animal we rescue. Together, we aim to create lasting change for dogs, their communities, and the people who love them.
