My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Will ONLY consider adoptions for homes that meet the following requirements: local Kansas City area only, a home with a secure fenced yard (no apartments), a confident dog already in the home, and no children. Toby also prefers adult human females to human males, although that could be a reaction to a male with facial hair.

Toby is a shy young adult male sheltie who will need a home with a confident dog playmate and a human that will gently challenge him to grow.

We have had Toby since April 2024, and he has been learning confidence with our two shelties. He is still very skittish with his foster-dad, who has a “Santa Beard” and we suspect the beard is part of his reaction. He is very cuddly with his foster-mom.

Toby loves belly rubs, chasing squirrels, playing with his foster-shelties, and mimicking everything his foster-sheltie siblings do. When they plop over for belly rubs, Toby plops over for belly rubs!  He is also an attention hog now, and will push his way in to get all the pets

He is still learning to walk on a leash. When he goes outside in the fenced backyard, all of Toby’s energy explodes and he really wants to play with his foster siblings! He barks, he “punches” the air, he runs around and will play bow!

Toby watches everything around him, and because he is so dependent on his foster siblings to know how to “dog”, he MUST have dog companionship in the home. Toby needs a safe spot in the home that he has access too at all times, where he will feel safe (he stays in the corner next to his foster-mom’s desk at our home).

Toby is fed in his “safe spot”,  separated from other dogs until he finishes eating. He is slowly starting to learn new things, and he LOVES cheese!

We do not know how he will react to cats and children, but he does react to the neighborhood kids and cats by barking. I would NOT trust him around children or cats until he has had time to adjust and get used to them. We will NOT place him in a home with children.

Toby has the potential to be a very sweet companion dog, and he is young enough that with the right support we believe he will live a very fulfilling and active life. His large brown eyes melt our hearts, and those moments he lets down the barrier and leans in for pets and love are so precious.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We require a secure fenced yard, Our adoptions begin with the completion and submission of an Adoption Application. We do have an On Line Application available on our website: www.kcsheltierescue.org. Completion of an application does not commit you to an adoption, but does start the process. Be sure to fill the application in completely to avoid processing delays. Once we receive your application, it will be processed. We do process applications in the order in which they are received, but reserve the right to select the family that is the best suited for each particular dog's dispositions and needs. We will check your fence and your references, contact your vet reference/s and contact you. Please take time to walk your fence line. Check the height from the ground up in the lowest area, check for gaps at the ground, between posts that meet, posts at the house or buildings, gaps around the gates, and at the ground, broken, loose or missing pickets, and wood or brush piles against the fence. Most fence issues are easily dealt with, so please take the time to beef up areas of your fence you find that are not secure. This will help get your fence approved and save time.

More about this rescue

We are a 501 (c)3 not for profit Sheltie Rescue Corporation, licensed in Kansas and Missouri. We primarily serve the Greater Kansas City area by rescuing and searching for great "fur-ever" homes for the Shelties in our care. We have actually been rescuing and finding great homes for Shelties since 2001. We are continuing our work as a breed specific Rescue Corporation. But, don't be surprised if occasionally you spot an Aussie or Collie in our list of "Available Shelties" Take a quick look at some of our crew in the slide show, then "read all about them" from our Available Shelties.
