My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Caleb is a happy-go-lucky six terrier mix. What makes him special is his absolute love of face kisses—Caleb's a very gregarious friend to ALL people (he's a bit more selective about other four-legged friends). As folks enjoyed these snuggly interactions, several team members noticed Caleb had some extra lumps earlier this year. We biopsied several of them and received the unfortunate diagnosis of mast cell tumor (MCT) disease on the mass we removed from his left thigh. The medical team is concerned that, like many other middle-aged terrier mixes, Caleb may have or develop more of these tumors over time. MCTs can vary in how they behave, and fortunately the definitive diagnosis we have from Caleb's surgical biopsy was a low grade—more likely to be able to be fully removed and less likely to metastasize or travel to other organs. We can't guarantee that any other masses may be as benign though, and Caleb will need to have any new bumps assessed by a veterinarian to minimize the risk of something more sinister sneaking up on his family. To be on the safe side, Caleb is currently on a combination of antihistamine therapies to protect his tummy and immune system from getting out of whack should there be more mast cell disease that could cause stomach ulcers or anaphylaxis. Fortunately these medications are inexpensive and available over the counter, which shouldn't present a tremendous ongoing expense to adopters.
