My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Penny was guesstimated to be 7 yrs old and weighs 11 lbs while at the dog shelter. However, based on her youthful looks, her level of energy, her clear sparkling black eyes and pearly white teeth, we estimate her to be somewhat younger, more around 5 years of age. Penny was confiscated by authorities from a hoarding situation along with other dogs, where the neglected dogs were confined to a basement. She is so cute and elegant with her square compact body shape and her long muscular legs that give her great mobility. Penny’s blond coat has the added benefit of being low shedding. She has stunningly big, bright and shiny dark eyes that are amplified by her surrounding light cream coloured mask. Penny is such a pretty girl!”
She had a dental cleaning done and her “pearlies” are super white (minus a couple of missing lower front teeth). She is a healthy little dog, who loves food and is very alert: she always keeps a watchful eye on her caregiver’s every move.
Her favourite occupation is to watch her foster mom pottering around the kitchen, patiently sitting close by on the floor hoping to get a treat or keeping watch while laying in her kitchen day bed. She loves to chew on raw hide bones and entertains herself gnawing on them for long periods of time. Every now and then, she comes to her foster mom for a quick petting and gives her kisses to thank her for the attention she just received, then, she happily returns, tail wagging to her bed, to keep watching the love of her life. Penny does not give her heart to everybody, she is exclusive and keeps all of her love for her caregiver. She is extremely affectionate, devoted and trusting towards her # 1 human: turns over for belly rubs, lets her handle and touch any body parts including her paws, ears, mouth. She does not display any aggression towards other humans, she simply ignores them unless they offer her a treat! She likes to sit on her foster mom’s lap for a short while or near her on the sofa. She is smart, inquisitive, curious and interested in everything her favourite person does, which makes her a great, very present companion. She is a bit wary of men but forgets her fear when they offer a treat! She is extremely food motivated. While she is shy when first meeting strangers and will ignore them, she quickly warms up for a moment with a treat, especially if there is another friendly dog around to lead the way. She likes other dogs, even large size dogs do not scare her and is definitely more confident in other canines presence. She is a follower, not a leader. She patiently waits for her turn to get a treat but she will not happily share her food bowl or chewing bone with other dogs and will silently curl her upper lip to let it known. She is also fine with cats as she was exposed to them while residing at her US shelter and allowed in the office where long term cat residents roamed freely.
Penny is working on her leash walking skills and doing well. She has the cutest, funny antics, such as her twirling on herself welcoming dance when foster mom returns home or prepares her food bowl annd her sudden outbursts of passionate kissing when she gets up in the morning!

Penny is pee pad trained and well housebroken. She can also be given the run of the house as she is not destructive at all and is well housebroken. She knows to relieve herself on pee pad or outdoors.
Penny will alert and bark when someone is at the door. When she first arrived in our foster care, any noise would often triggered a bark, but she pretty much has this under control by now.
This little gal is a true gem, such a pleasure to have around because she provides steady, real ever present company to her caregiver without being overly demanding of attention.

Ideal adoptive candidate (s) for this little waggy tail cutie: female single or female couple, or both gender couple with a male partner who does not mind being second fiddle ;-)
Are you this special person Penny has been long waiting for?

More about this rescue

Home Sweet Home Dog Rescue has been in existence since 2013. We rescue from rural areas, small towns pounds and shelters outside the Ontario borders where adoption are few and far in between and euthanasia rates are still very high. Prior to Covid, we pulled dogs mainly from the US. Since rescues could no longer access the CA/US borders, we started doing overseas rescue, mainly from Egypt and neighbouring countries, where the need is tragically gigantic.
