My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This super handsome, smooth talker may have been a swashbuckler. (probably not) Cal was brought in as an injured stray in February. He had a huge gash from one side to the other across his lower back. He must have gotten it days to a week earlier, because it was already infected. After x-rays to check for any broken bones, our vet determined that we would need to let it heal for awhile since the area was so large and there wasn`t enough skin to pull together. The most likely cause? Much more likely than a sword fight with another pirate, Cal may have crawled into a vehicle engine to keep warm. When it was started, the fan may have sliced his back. After a month of healing, he had surgery to close the remaining gap. Cal is fully healed now and ready to settle into a less adventurous lifestyle. We doubt he had much interaction with humans beyond feeding, since he seems to know that`s our job. He was slower to accept much fussing and petting and will still try to give you a swat if he feels you are being too generous with the pets. He does a lot of chirping and muttering to us and himself and his conversations are delightful. Cat is FIV+

Additional adoption info

Our adoption fees vary, according to species, size, age and other issues. Discounts apply in some cases. We consider these to be good values after you take into consideration how much veterinary care goes into each animal before placement. Every dog, cat and rabbit is spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Our dogs are also heartworm tested if appropriate and started on heartworm preventative, examined for fleas & treated with a monthly preventative, vaccinated for Bordatella, rabies (unless too young), and DHLP, dewormed, and microchipped. All animals come with an adoption packet which includes their health record.

We do require that you fill out an application, and wait patiently for at least 24 hours while our committee goes over it. In almost all cases, you'll be required to come visit the animal. We will do out of town adoptions, but you must comply with the above conditions. In some cases, applications may be pre-approved via email, fax or mail, so that you may pick up your new pet in one visit.

More about this shelter

We are working hard to end pet overpopulation by setting an example for our community! All dogs, cats and rabbits are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and we have begun a spay/neuter program "No More Litters" for the pets belonging to low income families. We work very hard to get our adoptable animals into good homes as quickly as possible.
