My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico***

Hi I'm Sora, I’m a super sweet and happy-go-lucky husky mix who’s always ready for fun! I have so much love to give, and I can’t wait to find my forever family. When the volunteers from Surfers for Strays first met me, they found me tied to a tree with very little space to roam. The local family I am staying with loves me, I know for sure, because they feed me well and always make sure I have fresh water, but I would need so much more exercise that they can provide for me. Unfortunately, where I live it is not very common to walk their dogs, so other than the occasional trip to the beach once every few months, I spend my days tied to the tree. Thankfully other dogs come by to play with me and sometimes even a chicken or a cat will spend a little bit of their time with me, so I am not getting too bored. My humans say, they cannot let me loose like the other dogs, cause I will run away to explore the world. Fences are not really a thing here, so nothing could hold me back - and everything just seems soo exciting! All the people and animals you can meet, all the smells you get to sniff and I am so curious about the world! So they have to tie me to keep me safe. They said, they don't want me to be run over by cars, whatever that means...? The volunteers brought a much longer leash for me, though, so now I have so much more room to jump around!

I adore people and greet everyone with a wagging tail and a big, goofy smile. I'm the kind of dog who will make every day brighter with my enthusiasm and affection. I will thrive in an active home with someone who can keep up with my playful spirit and give me all the love and attention I need. Oh, and have you seen my eyes? They’re the most stunning shade of blue—so bright and full of life! One look into them, and you’ll be hooked. My humans say they’re completely irresistible (and I have to agree!).

Just recently the volunteers gave me a bath (meh) and then took me on a car ride (yey) to the beach (double yey) and it was such a fun day! I got to show how fearless and curious I am, how good I am with other people and also with dogs, which on leash I mostly ignored and on the beach I wanted to play with! It was really an awesome day and I hope I get to do it again soon. Maybe already with my furever family?

If you’re looking for a fun, loving, and energetic best friend, I'm your girl!

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
