My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, I'm Sam, also known as Sammy. I was previously called Swamp Kitty because that’s where the lady who rescued me first saw me—in the wetlands along Pretty Lake in Ocean View. She asked the neighbors about me, but no one knew who I was, so she decided to start feeding me. She tried so hard to be my friend and had the best food and wet treats in my territory, so I kept returning. She would sit with me and talk sweetly while I ate. She kept trying to pet me, but I didn't trust humans, so I maintained my distance. She would say to me, “I think you are a lost house kitty. I just need to earn your trust. I'm going to get you help!”

One day, I finally decided to let her pet me. The next day, I even head-booped her hand before my meal. She seemed excited about this progress, but I still wouldn’t let her pick me up and put me in a carrier. Eventually, she set up a strange box on the back deck and placed my food inside it. I trusted her enough to walk in and eat the food, but I never showed up when she had appointments to get me neutered.

Just as I was feeling good about my time with this lady, the other cats in the neighborhood who had also discovered the regular food source began to bully me and chase me away. I wanted to spend more time with the nice lady, but it became too risky to go back. Occasionally, I would see her in her car, and she would stop to talk to me and encourage me to visit.

Eventually, the strange box and food dishes appeared at another cat lady’s house three blocks down the street, and she began taking care of me. Then one morning, while I was eating my breakfast, the box fell around me. I panicked for a few seconds but then accepted pets and wet treats while they tried to guide me from the trap into a smaller cage.

I went to PETA to be spayed, had all my ticks removed, my wounds cleaned, and even got microchipped. Afterward, I returned to the second cat lady’s house to rest and recover. I was amazed at how warm and safe I felt there! I quickly accepted pets from her and became a cuddle bug (on my terms, of course, as I still have a few reservations), confirming for them that I was definitely a lost kitty, not one born outside. The original lady who fed me was also there to give me love and attention.

They say I am going to find a wonderful home inside! I am becoming more comfortable and affectionate each day in my new safe space and will make a fantastic companion. I’m a total lap cat - my foster mom calls me her cuddly barnacle! I am so grateful that I will never have to worry about surviving on the streets again or fighting other cats just for a chance to eat.

Unfortunately, I am FIV positive, but that's really not a big deal these days. I can still live a long, happy life indoors! Find out more here: https://fivcats.com/ I bet I would get along nicely with other kitties, if slowly introduced. I am a very sweet boy who deserves a chance at the sweet indoor kitty lifestyle. Pick me!
