My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kaia: The Brilliant, People-Loving Athlete

Kaia is an incredibly sweet, intelligent girl who arrived as a stray on March 4, 2025. She is heartworm negative and is ready to leave the stress of the shelter behind for a committed, active home where she can show off her amazing skills!

A Star Student and Play Partner
•Toy Genius: Kaia is exceptionally bright and highly toy-focused! She loves to play fetch and knows how to drop the ball and roll it back to her handler. She spent an entire outing focused on this fun game, showing she is happy and engaging with all people.
•Wonderful Manners: She is cheery, joyful, and happy with people. She knows boundaries and is careful not to overstep a person, showing great respect and trainability. She rides well in the car and is ready for fun `snout and about` adventures.
•Easy Handling: She is easy to leash and her leash walking is generally above average. When she pulls, it is manageable, and she walks smoothly to the yard.

Kaia is a dog-selective girl whose personality and behavior completely change around other dogs in the shelter environment. She needs to be the only pet in her home to truly thrive:
•Only-Pet Home Required: Kaia has serious impulse control and assertiveness issues around other dogs. She can be reactive when passing kennels and has been muzzled in playgroup due to unsteerable behavior and being overly forward. She will be happiest and safest in a single-dog household where she can focus all her affection and energy on her people.
•Needs Routine: After a long stay at the shelter, Kaia is struggling with anxiety and urgently needs a stable routine and an owner who is ready to give her the daily mental and physical enrichment she craves.

Kaia is an amazing dog who will be a loyal, playful, and brilliant companion for the right active person or family. If you`re looking for an intelligent friend to be your star player, come meet Kaia!

More about this shelter

Marion County Animal Services is the largest animal shelter in our county. Operating as a no-kill shelter, our kennels are almost always full. We provide adoption, fostering opportunities, work with rescues, accept volunteers and provide the training for veterinary assisting students. In addition, we run the Neuter Commuter and provide all animal control services in Marion County.
Due to the sheer volume of animals in our care, we need lots of help from our community in our effort to adopt out more and save more!
We don't only accept the ideal animals into our shelter. We can offer you quite the array of animal breeds and personalites! Keep an open mind when visiting our shelter- you may find that your perfect match is not at all what you set out to find.
We're here to help you as well as our homeless and lovable animals.
