My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

CANE (watch my video!)

  • Male, neutered
  • 2-1/2 years old
  • Pit bull terrier
  • 64 lbs.
  • Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention â€‹
  • Good with dogs and kids; untested with cats

Cane is part hippo, part piggy and wrapped up in 100% love ! He always wants to have physical contact with the people in the room, whether it’s just a paw touching their foot or full on climbing into their laps. Cane knows many basic commands including sit, down, shake, and even loose leash walking! He’s working on waiting to eat his food and being better about jumping up on people. He is a fast learner and eager to please. He does well in his crate, and while curious, doesn’t show any destructive tendencies when outside of the crate. Cane makes the funniest snorting noises when excited and laying on his back for belly rubs. He lets his foster parents play with his ears, feet, mouth, and tail, and gives the most gentle love nibbles.

Cane LOVES other big dogs and is happiest when he has a sturdy playmate to romp around with. He can get a bit too excited when meeting new dogs, sometimes coming on a little strong or trying to be the boss. For that reason, Cane would do best in a home with a laid-back, easygoing large dog who doesn’t mind his big personality. He tends to get overstimulated by small dogs or very high-energy pups, so a calmer canine companion (or being the only dog) would be the best fit for him.

More about this rescue

LOVEPAWS was founded as an animal intake prevention program to help keep pets in homes and out of shelters. To do this, we offer various types of assistance to pet owners including our pet food pantry and our re-homing service. We help find new homes for pets whose owners cannot keep them but do not want to surrender their pet to the shelter. While our focus is on Prince George’s County, MD, we offer these services to the entire DC Metro area.

Our scope and mission has grown quickly since we were founded in 2019 and we now pull dogs and cats from open-admission, high-intake shelters in MD, VA and other Southern states. This has expanded our rescue to be able to save dogs and cats of all breeds. Our expanded mission is to save the lives of abandoned dogs and cats and place them in loving and permanent homes. While we are a non-breed-specific rescue, we are a pittie-friendly rescue that has a soft spot for the pit bulls at the Prince George’s County animal shelter. They face the heartbreaking reality of the county’s pit bull ban which makes them unavailable for adoption to the public. We are committed to stepping forward whenever we can and wherever there is the greatest need.

LOVEPAWS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are an exclusively foster-based rescue with our foster network spanning MD, DC, and VA.
