My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Maryland: The Smart, Affectionate Treat Master

Maryland is a lovely girl who is ready to bond deeply with a committed, active owner! She is highly trainable, affectionate, and smart, making her an ideal partner for someone who enjoys engaging with their dog.

Highly Motivated and Trainable
•Food Focus: Maryland is extremely food motivated and excellent at catching treats from the air! Her strong focus means she`s a fantastic student. She already knows the `sit` command and is ready to learn much more.
•Home Habits: She appears to be housebroken, immediately using the bathroom upon entering the yard. She also takes treats gently despite her high motivation.
•Affectionate: Maryland loves affection and will gladly spend time with her person.

Maryland is eager to explore the world and needs an owner who can handle her enthusiasm:
•Leash Manners: Maryland is easy to leash but can be a moderate-to-strong puller when excited. She gets easily distracted by cars, often looking as if she wants to go for a ride! She needs an owner committed to helping her perfect her leash manners.
•Playful Energy: When transitioning back from the yard, she can get excited and start jumping—this is a behavior that an owner should be prepared to redirect with consistent training.
•Positive Behavior: She is non-reactive to cyclists and enjoys her walks and time outside, cruising around the yard before coming in for attention.

Maryland is an intelligent, loving dog who just needs a leader who can channel her laser-focus and energy. If you`re looking for a dog that will excel in training and shower you with affection, come meet Maryland!

More about this shelter

Marion County Animal Services is the largest animal shelter in our county. Operating as a no-kill shelter, our kennels are almost always full. We provide adoption, fostering opportunities, work with rescues, accept volunteers and provide the training for veterinary assisting students. In addition, we run the Neuter Commuter and provide all animal control services in Marion County.
Due to the sheer volume of animals in our care, we need lots of help from our community in our effort to adopt out more and save more!
We don't only accept the ideal animals into our shelter. We can offer you quite the array of animal breeds and personalites! Keep an open mind when visiting our shelter- you may find that your perfect match is not at all what you set out to find.
We're here to help you as well as our homeless and lovable animals.
