My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Animal Profile: Alfie is an estimated 3.5-year-old 55 lb neutered male Lab Red Heeler mix with the most epic ears who originally hails from Texas. This boy is smart, loyal and energetic with a solid temperament -- friendly with people and dogs alike. He loves to walk on leash and has worked hard on his leash manners. He thrives with consistent access to the outdoors and prefers a more quiet environment to city living. Alfie is always a smiling, happy boy and is a good household companion - crate and house trained. He'd love to be your adventure buddy!

Foster Update:

If you’re looking for a dog who can keep up on the trails by day and be your snuggle buddy by night, Alfie is your guy. This 4-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix is as smart as he is sweet, with a heart as big as his floppy ear (which, by the way, only flops when he runs—adorable, right?).

Active & Playful – Whether it’s fetch (his all-time favorite), hiking, or exploring the outdoors, Alfie is always up for an adventure. He’s got excellent off-leash recall in secluded areas and will naturally check in with you on the move.

Obedience-Trained & Kennel Pro – Alfie has worked hard on his manners and knows "place," "here," "sit," "down," "quiet," and "free." He even waits for permission before eating! He’s fully kennel-trained, sleeping soundly all night and staying comfortably for up to 6+ hours during the day.

Loving & Loyal – After a day of action, Alfie turns into a “rotisserie chicken of love” (yes, really!). He adores cuddles, head scratches, and bedtime snuggles. He thrives on companionship and would love a home that gives him both structure and affection.

Great with Small Dogs & Kids – Alfie plays well with small dogs and young children and enjoys private playdates with bigger dogs. He’s working through some past anxieties but adapts quickly to new environments.

The Perfect Fit? Alfie would thrive in a moderately active home that can give him regular exercise, love, and a cozy bed to curl up in at night. At 55 pounds, he’s the perfect size—big enough for adventure, small enough for couch snuggles!

Adoption Info: Adoption fee is $550, which includes spay/neuter, current vaccinations per AVMA standards, microchip, negative heartworm test if over 6 months, and health certificate. Your donation may be tax deductible as DG is a 501c3 organization.

Animal History: This dog was surrendered to the Freer shelter by an owner who moved to an apartment. He was transferred from Freer Animal Shelter in Texas and arriving to Seattle area foster care on 9/22/22 and adopted in 2023; unfortunately his loving owners are relocating to NYC and are looking to rehome him to a family outside the city. Alfie is currently available for adoption in the greater Seattle area.
