My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Carmen is a 10 month old German Shepherd puppy. She is a big girl and will most likely be over 85 pounds by the time she finishes growing. She was with her canine parents and siblings for the first 8 months of her life and then moved into a foster home with three new dog siblings and two cats. She loves all of the dogs and the cats, particularly Cosmo, the orange tabby cat. They are the best of friends. They lie on the dog bed together and even sleep in Carmen's crate together. Cosmo acts like Carmen't 'support cat'.Carmen's fosters have been socializing her with people. She is very shy around new people but is slowing opening up. She is very gentle and will now accept treats from new people who come to her home.Carmen is learning to walk on a leash and goes for regular walks with her pack. She is a sweet and gentle girl but does have a big scary bark which comes in handy for coyotes and solicitors. Carmen is healthy and received all of her puppy vaccinations and a microchip. She will need someone who has a German Shepherd background and shy dog experience. She needs to go to a home that has one or more confident dogs in it for her successfully fit into her new environment. Having a cat would be a plus! Once she she is comfortable with her new surroundings, Carmen will be a sweet and gentle - and large - companion. One final thing. Carmen loves, loves, loves her crate. It is her safe space and she will need one. She may 'steal' towels, stuffed animals, and blankets to make it comfortable for her. If you have a cat that is willing to share it with her, then that would be great. (Cosmo the cat does not come with Carmen).

The minimum adoption donation for adults is $375 and the adoption donation for puppies is $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible. The adoption donation provides that all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis ( i.e., puppies who will need to be altered by 6 mos old). Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.September 17, 2025, 8:36 am

Make a donation to the Saving Gideon Fund!

In Gideon's honor, we would like to start a Saving Gideon Fund. This fund will be for seriously injured dogs who need immediate medical care. Often times the decision to save a life depends upon how much money is in our bank account. It's very sad, but unfortunately the truth! We would like to create this fund so that the next time we are asked to save a severely injured dog we can say YES!

Please help us to create this fund in Gideon's honor!
This fund will allow us to save more injured German Shepherds like him.

Additional adoption info

All prospective adoptive families must complete an on line application followed by a telephone interview and then receive a home visit before a German Shepherd is placed in their forever home.

Our adoption donation is $300 for Adults and $400 - $500 for Puppies. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100% tax deductible.

Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.

Donations are tax deductible and also help other dogs in need!

More about this rescue

Coastal German Shepherd Rescue of Southern California is a non-profit 501(c)3 public charity dedicated to finding loving homes for abandoned German Shepherds. Your tax deductible donations go to support these very deserving animals. Coastal was formed to serve communities in the counties of San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.

Coastal is dedicated to providing new beginnings for homeless German Shepherds who have been abandoned, neglected, abused, relinquished by their owners or just left at local shelters to await an uncertain future.

We are committed to finding loving permanent homes for the Orphaned dogs in our care. Coastal is an all volunteer, no-kill, non profit organization.

Our mission is to educate the public about German Shepherds, their lifespan, personality, activity level, along with overall responsible dog ownership. We also raise awareness of over population of animals through education, training, spaying and neutering. We work very hard to match each dog with the adoptive families.
