My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, I’m Tatum! I’m a 1 ½ year old Australian Shepherd with a personality as big as my heart…and appetite. I’m on the smaller side of standard around 40lbs. When I am not busy running at mach 1 speed, I’m busy winning over your heart with my soulful eyes and a tail that wags more than a windshield wiper in the rain. I am a typical velcro dog so expect me to always be by your side.
I absolutely love belly rubs and come with a set of commands that I already know, such as sit, paw and lie down, which always winds up with me demanding belly rubs. Did I mention that I love long walks anywhere and riding with you in the car? Like Hootie said, “I only wanna be with you!”

While I must admit that I look quite stunning, do not let this cute face fool you. I need daily stimulation from my human, no matter the weather or time of day. It takes A LOT to wear me out, so a fenced yard is a must. I would love to work on a farm or get involved in dog sports like agility, flyball or dock diving.

I prefer women, as men can be scary sometimes, which may elicit me to bark and growl at them, especially if they are standing. I have not shown any aggression toward men, I am just afraid. Any man in my life will need to commit to working with me and possibly seeking a trainer. I was adopted but returned when I began to guard my female adopter from my male adopter.

I also prefer female dogs better but need slow and controlled introductions to any dogs. I like friends to play with but need to make sure that our personalities fit well together, so a meet and greet with all family members (human and dog) would be best!

Finally, I do have some separation anxiety and can be frightened by loud noises and when I must go to the vet. I will need continued training to be the best boy that I can be. If given the opportunity, resources and a little bit of patience, I can be a very good boy and your best friend!

I hope to soon find my furever home where I can be your constant companion. I have so much love to give!

I am being fostered in Richmond, VA, but really need a new foster or adopter. (My current foster had to move into a smaller home & yard and 4 dogs is just too much.) Here is the application:

There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family.

More about this rescue

Nancy Gonzalez, founder and CEO, created Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF), a non-profit organization to promote the educated adoption and rescue of the Australian Shepherd (Aussie) dog breed.

In July of 2012, ASF initiated as a Facebook page hoping to have 1,000 user "likes" by the end one year. The page quickly outgrew expectations, now with a network of nearly 60,000 individuals striving to provide aid and refuge to Aussies all over the country.

Using the Facebook page as a platform, the website www.australianshepherdsfurever.org was developed as an additional resource aimed at educating the public on this intelligent and beautiful breed. It provides resources for those seeking help, or those willing to contribute to the Adopt, Save, Foster (ASF) philosophy. Through this philosophy, ASF has saved the lives of countless dogs and helped to provide assistance to those that have nowhere else to turn.

We as humans have a responsibility to speak up and take action in favor of those beings that are less fortunate. Thanks to a team of passionate and proactive volunteers, Aussies nationwide are given a chance at a better life through Australian Shepherds Furever.
