Foster Home Feedback

** No Cats

10/24/25 Volunteer Feedback: Valais has been at our shelter for over 7 months now. While he is doing ok and spends much of his day napping, it really is heartbreaking to see him at the shelter still.  Val really is going to need a place without any other dogs as of now, for at least a few months of decompressing. He has more issues with other dogs and barriers (such as fences) versus coming across dogs on the leash. He has pretty good manners with space on the leash. He does go to the rescue's pack walks and can walk comfortably around the rescue's dogs.
Val struggles to find a foster home due to needing just the right situation and most of our fosters having other pets. Crate and rotate just doesn't work for him after months at the shelter and th barrier issue. Despite what may seem like negatives, he will be an easy dog for someone without a pet. Whether that is a foster with the idea of giving him the potential of growing his adoptive home pool and giving him the space until adoption or an adopter without another pet. This poor happy guy deserves a home of his own.
He is potty trained and will enjoy whatever a home has to offer, whether that is a lazy day relaxing or day of long walks and play time, Val will just be happy to be with you. Please consider fostering or adopting this sweet boy, you will make an entire team of shelter volunteers ever so happy.

10/3/25 Volunteer Feedback: Just a dog and his pile of stuffing. Valais is happiest when he’s tearing into a plush toy, ears perked as the fabric gives way with a satisfying rip. In no time, the stuffing is flying, and Valais is sprawled out proudly in the middle of the mess like it’s his personal throne.
He’s a tug-of-war champion, gripping the toy with determination and refusing to let go—unless you do by accident, in which case Valais will promptly return the slobbery remains, ready to resume the battle. His enthusiasm is contagious, and his goofy grin makes it impossible not to laugh.
Valais may not be trained as an Avalanche Search and Rescue dog, but he sure looks the part in his retro 1980s powder blue snowsuit. It’s easy to imagine him bounding through snowy hills, tail wagging, ears flapping in the wind. After a long day of snow-filled adventures, Valais would be the kind of dog to curl up by the fire, cozy in his little sweater, soaking in the warmth.

9/10/25 Volunteer Feedback: Valais did fabulous on our walk today. He did great when he saw a bunny across the field. Valais was more about play than training today, but thats ok! When we got back he lounged on my lap to cool down . Valais is such a great dog !

8/21/2025 Volunteer Feedback:  I spent the afternoon with Valais yesterday, and he was such a joy. Before getting in the car, he was pulling pretty hard on the leash, but with a reminder to slow down and some redirection, he settled right in—even sitting when asked.
Once we got going, he did amazing in the car! He loved hanging out in the back but couldn’t resist sneaking up front a couple of times for some extra pets. He also got to enjoy a pup cup (drool monster alert!) and licked it clean!
Back at the shelter, we relaxed together, and I discovered that although Valais weighs about 80 pounds, he’s convinced he’s a lap dog. He would love to be your best friend and cuddle buddy!!

8/14/25 Volunteer Feedback: Valais is a super sweet dog who does super great in the car. He is definitely one of my favorite dogs and is so extremely sweet and smart!!

7/19/25 Volunteer Feedback: I recently took Valais on a kennel break while I was on vacation, and my own dog was at the lake. I’m not sure when Val was last able to relax in a home setting, so even just two days away from the shelter seemed to be incredibly beneficial for him. He really had a chance to decompress, and it showed.

Valais did great on walks. He had a couple of reactions to one particular dog who instigated things, but otherwise, he was phenomenal. He does have a strong prey drive—he’s definitely interested in squirrels and bunnies, so he’ll pull a bit when he sees them. When it’s time to head back home or to the kennel, he tries to stretch out his time outside by rolling around and taking his sweet time—he clearly loves being outdoors and enjoying the moment.

At home, Valais just wanted to relax. He enjoyed the quiet, calm environment and was perfectly content lounging around and napping throughout the day. I let him sleep with me, because why not—after so much time in a shelter, he deserved it. He’s a total cuddle bug and a bit of a bed hog, but in the best way.

He also met my mom and was very sweet and happy to see her. When I had to leave the house, I set him up in a spare bedroom with a crate and a bed, and he stayed there with the door shut. When I returned, everything was exactly as I left it—nothing was destroyed, and he greeted me with so much joy.

Valais is truly a wonderful dog. He just wants love, comfort, and a home where he can be spoiled a little. Please don’t overlook him—he’s a great companion and absolutely deserves the best.

5/12/25 Building Volunteer Feedback: Valais and I had an amazing afternoon filled with a long walk full of all the sniffs he could get. Valais was so brave when cars drove by. He would look up at me to show me he was not scared and was so tough. Valais has honestly become the best dog on a leash. We walked with a loose leash the whole walk. The only thing he was super scared of was some Tyvek that was flapping in the wind. With some words of confidence and string cheese, we made it past it with a little barking, moving on to enjoy the rest of our walk.

4/29/25 Building Volunteer Feedback: Valais is a sweet and gentle pup who thrives on affection and playtime. His love for tennis balls and his cherished blankie showcases his playful and loving nature, and his soulful gaze is truly captivating. His intelligence shines through as he listens attentively and confidently performs his sit and shake commands. He is easily amused and finds joy in even the simplest things, such as flopping happily with his deflated basketball.

Away from the shelter, Valais walks beautifully on a leash, demonstrating his ability to focus and enjoy his surroundings. His excitement around other dogs, particularly when barriers are involved, is an area of growth. However, this enthusiasm reflects his eagerness to engage, and with patience, guidance, and a supportive environment, he has the potential to gain confidence and feel more at ease.

Overall, Valais is a loving, playful companion who finds comfort in simple pleasures—especially his beloved blankie. His affectionate nature and intelligent demeanor make him a wonderful match for the right home.

Building Volunteer Feedback 4/18/25:  â€‹Valais is a very chonky and handsome pit mix. He was scared of me a couple of weeks ago when I first met him but was so happy and affectionate today. His favorite activities are going for walks and chasing balls in the yard. His smile will melt your heart, and he would love to spend afternoons on the couch with you!

Additional adoption info

There is a pre-adoption application, reference check, and home visit required prior to adopting an animal. There is an adoption donation/fee applied to all dogs. This fee ranges from $100-150. These fees help cover the veterinary care we have provided for the animals while they wait for homes. The fee also helps pay for the food and other general care we provide for the dogs. You must be 21 yrs or older to adopt a dog and can not live in a an area where there are dog breed bans. We do adopt to homes outside on the area, but there are special requirements for out of state adopters.

Go meet their pets

We regularly have "Meet the Dogs!" events at the West Fargo PetSmart store. These events will give you the opportunity to meet some of the dogs we have available for adoption and to visit with our volunteers. See our website for schedule dates/times.
