My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweetest big boi!

Hey there! I’m a 2-year-old, 80-pound Shepherd mix (yep, I’m a big boy!), and I’ve had quite the journey lately. I was transferred from Pasadena due to the fires, spent some time in a foster home, then with a TAP foster for a week, and now I’ve been with my current crew since January 19. It's been a lot of change, but I’m doing my best to adjust and find my place in the world. I’m neutered, potty trained, and I sort of get the hang of the crate and leash thing, we’re working on it! I’ve been told I’m a quick learner, especially when treats are involved (I mean, who isn’t?). I already know a few tricks and I’m really good at the “wait” command, like waiting for my food or patiently standing at the door before we head outside.

I’m generally a calm and independent guy. I like to nap, chill, and play with my chew toys. I’m very into sniffing around and exploring, especially outdoors. I get a little nervous with new people, I’ve barked a few times, but mostly I’ll just retreat if I’m unsure. Once I get to know you though, I love belly rubs and being close by. I’ve been caught counter surfing once or twice… I’m just a curious dude who likes to see what’s going on!

As for other dogs, it’s a little complicated. I used to live with a Corgi and we apparently got along fine, but on walks I can be reactive when I see other pups. It’s not super clear if I want to play or if I’m just unsure, so slow, supervised introductions would be best if I were to have a doggy sibling. I haven’t been around kids much, but based on how I behave in the park, older, calmer kids would probably be a better match for me.

I don’t need tons of exercise—just about 10-15 minutes of active play and I’m good for the day. Fetch is a favorite of mine! I’d love a home with a yard where I can go out and explore at my own pace. I think I’d do best with someone who’s home most of the time so we can build a strong bond. Once I feel safe and connected, I really start to shine.

I’ve been through a lot, but I’ve also learned a lot—and I know with the right person or family, I could be a truly awesome companion. Got room in your heart (and your yard) for a sweet, curious, belly-rub-lovin’ boy like me? My adoption fee is $350 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip. If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane.
Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational.
All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times.
All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000.
Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc.

More about this rescue

Overview
The Animal Pad is a nonprofit, all-breed dog rescue devoted to saving the lives of dogs facing euthanasia at high kill animal shelters and off the streets of Mexico. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home locally.

We are dedicated to animal advocacy, and educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We are a foster based rescue, and rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the amazing people who make donations toward the rescue and care of the dogs we save.

We are always looking for adopters, fosters, donations, volunteers, etc.. Please let us know if you would like to get involved by contacting us at one of the email addresses found below.
