My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

HUGE CUDDLE BUG ALERT!!!

Meet Koda (fka Fortune). This, oh so handsome boy, is an approximately 3 ½ year old Aussie/Great Pyr mix looking for a family who loves walks, playtime, and cuddling as much as he does! He is a big teddy bear when it comes to getting lovins. Ear rubbings are his absolute favorite. (Oh, and lying down beside you, or better yet, ON you, to get those ears rubbed.)

Next to cuddles, his second most favorite thing is playing. He thrives on playtime, and would rather drool on stuffies than tear them apart. He loves other dogs and would love to have a friendly, playful doggy brother or sister to play with, or at the least, a neighborhood dog to have frequent play dates with.

Koda is good with older children but has not been around young children and because of his large size, younger children are not recommended. (He is not the biggest fan of cats though, so no cats in his fever home.) He also enjoys playing in water (and mud. LOL)

Koda is very intelligent, able to meet your requests of sit, shake, come, and free when he knows you have a real beef jerky treat. He will use a classic “Pyr Paw” to get your attention, and then stuff his face into your lap for the good ear scratches. He loves car rides and does well while in the car. Koda is big and brave, and doesn’t always know his own size, and can have an occasional klutzy moment.

He enjoys watching the yard out the window, running free in large fenced area, and sniffing *everything* on long walks. Koda is a true guardian breed, barking at anything he considers a threat to his flock - especially loud trucks, motorcycles, and diesel engines. He instinctively will also bark at anything he sees running - other dogs, people, critters and kids - it is in his breeding to be concerned about others moving too fast. Due to his guardian nature, he would do well to have a confident owner who he can look up to, rather than protect. He becomes worried when he thinks it’s his job to take care of you. If his flock leaves the nest his big brown eyes will plead “You don’t need to go to work! Stay with me!” He will patiently wait for you to come home so he knows you're safe (and so you can play.)

True to a Pyr’s nature, he wants to explore (he was originally found as a stray) and will chase cars if given the opportunity - so a solid fence surrounding plenty of running space is a must! (No electric fences for this boy.) And for his safety, he must be leashed at all times if outside an enclosed area.

Koda is UTD on his vaccines, neutered, microchipped, and on HW and flea prevention and weighs about 80# (A lot of that is fur! And he could stand to lose a few pounds.) He is housebroken, crate trained, and leash trained.

If you think Koda is the perfect pup for you, please fill out an application at https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application.

There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to her new furever family. Koda is currently located in Jackson, OH.

More about this rescue

Nancy Pearlman-Gonzalez, Founder and CEO, created Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF), a non-profit organization to promote the education, rescue, fostering and adoption of the Australian Shepherd breed of dog.
In July 2012, Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF) initiated as a page on Facebook. Hoping to have 1,000 members at the end one year, ASF quickly grew into a network of more than 78,000 dedicated individuals striving to provide aid and refuge to Aussies all over the country.
From these phenomena, the website www.australianshepherdsfurever.org was developed to educate the public on this intelligent and beautiful breed, and provide resources to those seeking help or willing to contribute to the Adopt, Save and Foster (ASF) philosophy. ASF filed for non- profit status in July 2013 and obtained its status in July 2014 and through proactive networking, partnerships, training/rehabilitation and fundraising, ASF has saved the lives of countless dogs to include those with Parvo, Mange, Tick Disease, Cancer, Pneumonia, broken limbs and some of the most extreme cases of abuse that one could imagine. ASF focuses on the Aussies that most would turn their backs on. ASF is in its 5th year and over 1,910 Australian Shepherds have been rescued from high kills shelters, abusive owners and other high-risk situations.
We, as humans, have a responsibility to uphold, shelter and care for those beings that are less fortunate, that are simply cast away. Thanks to proactive individuals who work collectively, Aussies nationwide are being given a chance at a better life through Australian Shepherds Volunteers are an integral component of ASF for the maintenance of the website, screening potential fosters and adopters, providing training, fundraising, data base management, networking and transporting of recued Aussies. All Volunteers; Adopters, Fosters, Trainers and Transporters etc. are carefully screened and vetted to assure the safe and vital placement of these dogs into furever homes. We currently have over 170 foster families and over 160 dogs in foster care nationwide. We have professional trainers to work with our dogs with severe behavioral issues. We also have a team of Rescue Coordinators, Medical Advisors, Fundraisers, Regional Reps, Application Processors, Data Base Managers, Social Media Managers, Microchip and ID tag Registrars and Ground and Air Transport Coordinators that work together to save these beautiful dogs.
