My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Onyx appreciates the finer things in life like a comfy bed and a delicious meal (food is the key to his heart!) This sleek fellow came to the shelter after his owner could no longer care for him. Onyx is used to the comforts of home and can't wait to leave the shelter and go back to being loved and pampered. He has lived with other kitties successfully in the past. Onyx would be happy to go home with his brother Buzby, but it is not required. In his previous home, Onyx liked to play fetch and loved to play chase with a string, but his true love was listening to his owner sing. Whenever she started to sing, he would coming running for his free concert.
Onyx appreciate time to adapt to new places and would feel most comfortable in a home with kids 10 and up.

Adoptions are completed on a first come, first served basis. Please note there may be a wait to meet with a pet, dependent on advisor availability.

Please allow plenty of time to meet your perfect pet. Once you have selected a pet, the adoption process will take at least 30 minutes. We do not begin the adoption process after 5:30 pm.

Animal Humane New Mexico performs a background check on all adopters & does not adopt to anyone who has committed a violent crime. We reserve the right to refuse an adoption for any reason.

Please note, visitors must wear their mask indoors at all Animal Humane locations.

More about this shelter

Founded in 1965, Animal Humane New Mexico is the state’s leading private 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization serving more than 10,000 homeless and at-risk dogs & cats each year. We never euthanize based on age or length of stay and since 2010, have re-homed 100% of healthy pets in our care. We support every companion animal at Animal Humane with outstanding veterinary, social and emotional care, and love.

As a private nonprofit shelter, we receive no city, state or federal funding; each dollar judiciously spent is earned or raised. We are nationally recognized as a top U.S. charity based on financial accountability, transparency, and administrative-to-program cost ratios. Animal Humane is among only 9 percent of nationwide charities to have received five consecutive annual four-star evaluations, the highest possible, from Charity Navigator, including a top score of 100 for accountability and transparency.
