This handsome 1-year-old male Cattle Dog is full of potential and ready for his next big adventure — a forever home! Gatsby came to us from out of state, and he's now looking for a family who understands the needs of his smart, energetic breed.
Gatsby is a beautiful boy with a sharp mind and a loving heart. Like many Cattle Dogs, he thrives on activity and purpose. He’ll do best in a home where he can get plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and positive engagement. Whether it’s hiking, agility, or learning new tricks, Gatsby is eager to be your active companion.

From his foster: "Gatsby is a bright, loyal, and endlessly curious 1-year-old pup who’s made incredible progress in just a short time! Like many working breeds, he has a lot of energy, but with routine, structure, and training, he’s thriving. He’s really proud of himself when he gets things right, and it’s a joy to watch him light up and nail it! He is such a smart boy and is soaking up his training—nailing basic commands & recall, improving on leash daily, and gaining confidence with every new experience.
In true Cattle Dog fashion, he's observant and highly attuned to his environment, and he's learning how to focus that instinct in healthy, productive ways. He can be alert and vocal when strangers approach, but we're helping him learn when to bark and when to relax. He loves mental enrichment (puzzle toys, frozen treats, and tug-of-war are favorites), clear communication, and praise!
Gatsby is house trained and communicative. He’ll let you know when he needs to go out or when his water bowl is running low. He does great in the car and settles in easily for rides. We’re working on building his confidence when left home alone through gradual departures and a consistent routine. He can be vocal at first, but relaxes pretty quickly.
While he handles city walks well, Gatsby really comes alive when he has a yard or nature to explore - this is where you really see his working breed instincts shine.
He gets along well with my small dog and he’d also likely thrive with a confident, playful dog his size to show him the ropes. He appreciates a proper introduction to both dogs and humans (treats are the fastest way to his heart).
And if you're wondering—yes, Gatsby turns heads! We get stopped daily by people asking what breed he is and commenting on his handsome look.

Border Tails Rescue is a licensed no-kill animal rescue and welfare organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of stray dogs across the world, with a unique focus on Mexico. Border Tails Rescue has a physical shelter facility with dogs on site for viewing everyday. Border Tails Rescue primarily works with rural shelters across the country, including but not limited to TX, AR, AL, LA, KY, IN, and MI on a regular basis as well as CACC, Chicago’s open intake shelter. BTR is Woman-founded by Harleigh Garcia, who was 20 years old at the time. The organization was founded in December of 2019 and Border Tails Rescue is registered with Illinois Secretary of State as a non profit organization. Border Tails Rescue operates entirely on donations and adoption fees.
