My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Xander came to us as an Owner Surrender and had previously been in a pretty chaotic home environment. He was initially very shut down and underweight. We took time to allow him to come out of his shell and find his paws in a new home environment. During his stay with us he has been neutered, microchipped and titer tested for vaccine levels.

The Good. Xander is a sweet boy! He bonds closely to his chosen people (women preferred, as he is very, very timid with men and will hide). He loves to play with other dogs in his size range (25-lbs max) and is crate trained. When he need to go outside, he stands by his foster-Mum's patio door to go out to potty. He likes toys, is learning fetch, and loves to chew. He lives for belly rubs! He knows sit and down and responds lovely to his name.Xander is good on car rides. His foster home has children, but they are dog savvy and are used to herding breeds that will nip their heels.

The Not So Good. The not so good is no small pets (cats/hamsters/tortoise), as he has an inbuilt prey drive. He needs a routine lifestyle, not a lot of traffic coming in and out of the house or rowdy teenagers. He will alert bark, but redirects. Xander is initially fearful due to some not so good human interactions so he needs time to warm up.

Xander is located in Orange County, CA - no out of state adoptions

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We require that our adopters are 25 years or older to adopt one of our rescued dogs.

Our adoption process works as follows:

Download (print off) and complete an application for adoption from our web site at http://ocpoundhounds.com/how-to-adopt/

Submit the application by scanning and e-mailing OR by bringing with you to a Meet & Greet event;

Your application will be reviewed and if we feel there is a potential match a telephone interview will be conducted. If the telephone interview determines there is a good match we will check veterinarian, grooming and personal references provided on the application;

If the references are positive, we then arrange a Meet & Greet with all members of the family (and other dogs) at a neutral location;

If the Meet & Greet is successful, we then arrange for the 10-day in-home adoption trial to start. We recommend these start on a Friday evening to give you the weekend to adjust with your new family member;

After 10 days the adoption is evaluated, and if successful, the adoption is finalized. At this time all medical and vaccination information we have on the dog while in our care is transferred.

Each of our dogs have different adoption donation requests. This is a tax deductible donation that can be written off your taxes at the end of the year as a charitable deduction. This donation covers some of the veterinary / medical costs for the dogs, housing, food, board, flea prevention, micro-chipping and transportation, just to mention a few things.

We are an all-volunteer run organization who have full-time, regular employment and run the rescue in the hours left over in our day. We do not conduct individual dog previews. Please check our website for our Meet & Greets dates and locations.

Our dogs are not adopted out from Meet & Greets, and we do not place on a First Come, First Served basis.

We adopt out on the principle of what home is the best home for that dog, from what we determine by knowing the dog, his/her personality and learning about the lifestyle of the family interested in adopting .

Go meet their pets

If you would like to meet one of our Adoptable dogs, please complete an Adoption Application (by printing off and filling out) and return it to us by e-mail. If you are pre-approved a private Meet & Greet will then be arranged.

If you would like to donate any items to the rescue, such as collapsible wire crates, x-pens, pet beds, fleeces, leashes, harnesses, odor control products these are always gratefully received. A tax-deductible receipt can be provided.

More about this rescue

OCPoundHounds Small Breed Dog Rescue is a licensed non-profit charitable organization, that has been recognized as both a California and Federal 501(c)(3) . We are proudly listed on GuideStar.org.

We are an all-Volunteer run organization with no paid Members and NO FACILITY. We have been rescuing small breed dogs in Southern California since 2005 and have been in rescue for over 11 years and rely solely on foster homes.

Headquartered in Orange County, CA our all volunteer-run, foster-based group specializes in rescuing Small Breed / Toy dogs (primarily Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Papillions, Chinese Crested and Japanese Chins) that have been placed on the euthanasia lists in the local LA and Inland Empire high-kill shelters.

OCPoundhounds rescues dogs they feel have the best opportunity for being rehabilitated and re-homed with “Homes-For-Life” by dog-parents committed to giving an OCPoundhound a forever home, usually a 10 to 15 year commitment.

Once we rescue a dog. we specialize in socializing, positive reinforcement behaviour training and meeting all veterinary needs while in our care. We keep a dog in our rescue organization for as long as it takes for us to make the right placement match between the dog and the adoptive pet parents.

The adoption donation which is asked for a rescued OCPoundHound, cash and gift donations are 100% tax deductible.

These pay for a dog’s veterinary care, such as spay and/or neuter, dentals, vaccinations, micro-chipping, shelter fees and other medical care, such as kennel cough, flea/tick infestations, demodex mange and various other illnesses like parvo, distemper, and injuries, which need extensive and multiple veterinary visits. Some of our rescued dogs coming out of the shelter system need hundreds, even thousands, of dollars worth of veterinary care to make them adoptable. 100% of the Adoption Donation requested is used for our rescues. Some need less care and others are more medically-involved.

Owner Surrendered dogs of our breed specialization (Pomeranian's, Papillons and Chinese Crested) are accepted, and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. We believe owning a dog is a life-long commitment, but there are always extenuating circumstances. Owner-surrendered dogs have to be spayed or neutered and vaccinated before being accepted by OCPoundHounds to assist with placement, or a donation made to affray these costs.
