Meet Dexter (A1253806), the sweet soul I’m currently fostering. He may be a mix of Jack Russell and Staffordshire Terrier—and he’s about 9 months old, medium-sized, and full of heart.
When I first saw him at DAS, he was trembling in his kennel, too scared to even lift his head. I couldn’t walk past him—I had to bring him home. Since leaving the shelter, it’s clear this little guy has lived a rough life. He’s very timid around strangers, but has slowly warmed up to me and my fiancé. With gentle corrections and lots of positive reinforcement, Dexter is now fully potty trained—he hasn’t had an accident in two weeks and lets us know when it’s time to go out by waiting patiently at the back door.
Once he feels safe, Dexter is playful, affectionate, and so, so gentle. He loves roughhousing with my other dog and will nudge me with his mouth when he wants to play. Even when my rambunctious 8-month-old pup gets too rowdy, Dexter stays calm and sweet. Despite all his fear, he’s shown absolutely zero aggression—no reactivity, and no food guarding at all.
He does have some hair loss on his backside from a flea allergy and likely stress, but with medication and a loving environment, it’s already growing back.
He’s crate trained, knows “sit,” and understands when it’s time to go to “Dexter’s bed.” And while he may always be a little cautious, he’s made incredible progress and deserves the very best home.
