My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dexter is a sweet, goofy older boy who just wants someone to cuddle and play fetch with. He has been known to toss a ball or frisbee to himself in a pinch, but he definitely prefers a human companion for these sort of sporting activities! Dexter also loves walks and is very good on the leash, but he tends to tire out after a mile or two.

He is house trained and crate trained, and while he has on occasion managed to Houdini his way out of his crate, he has never caused any actual damage to the crate nor gotten into any mischief after he freed himself.

He does very well with other dogs, but would do just fine as an only dog as well - he definitely prefers the company of humans over canines! He is generally a very quiet, low-key dog. That said, we recommend he not be placed in a home with cats (he has not shown any prey-drive tendencies, but he is a little too interested in them for their comfort level).

While he is a very gentle boy, he does sometimes get a little jumpy (especially when meeting new people) and can inadvertently head-butt with his big blocky head, so a home with older kids would be ideal.

He is very smart and knows basic commands (sit, stay, come, crate) and LOVES treats! Dexter has not shown any resource-guarding tendencies regarding food, treats, or toys but he can be a vocal player with other dogs. Dexter would love a home with a nice fenced yard for playing fetch, where he gets lots of human attention and snuggles.

And he's pretty well trained too, check him out here: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/DTMYniyrDmJqV4BY/

Dexter gets along well with dogs around his size or bigger and loves to play with toys. Although he hasn't been around cats too often, he has met two and was curious but didn't lunge or chase them. With slow and supervised effort, he would likely get along fine with cats and small dogs.

Dexter loves walks and exploring, loves his pool, so his trainer recommends he goes to an active home. He'd also do great with a veteran or senior who still has some pep in their step. When he's not out and about, Dexter enjoys snuggling up on the couch with his humans while watching Netflix.

Give this sweetheart a loving home in his  elder  years, especially this Holiday season. Please foster or adopt Dexter!

To ensure we're meeting both pet and adopters' needs, we ask potential adopters to complete an Adoption Application (www.bit.ly/DH-Adoption) for caretakers to review. Once your application is approved, we will bring the adoptable pet to your home for a preliminary visit. We are 100% donation-funded and our fees are equivalent to (or less than) the cost to fully vet a new dog yourself .

Additional adoption info

Those interested in dogs on our site are asked submit an application that we share with this dog's current caretaker. The caretaker reviews it to see if the pup would make a good fit for your home and if so, they will follow up with a phone interview. If you both agree it's a match, you would sign a contract, pay a fee and receive your dog within 2 weeks.

If both caretaker and applicant agree that the dog is a great fit, a contract is signed between the parties and the adoption fee is $400.00-$450.00 and is collected via PayPal. This adoption fee covers the cost of transport and also ensures the dog has all of it's basic vetting to include spay/neuter, shots, etc.

Go meet their pets

Our dogs travel from Atlanta, Georgia directly to their adoptive homes in the northeast. Our transporter drives up the coast from DC, all the way to the Northeastern states.

While you can't meet our dogs prior to adoption, we will speak with you extensively, provide videos, share trainer evaluations and offer proof of vetting to ensure our dogs are a match for your home. Those that aren't at match, would be returned to us here in Atlanta at no cost to the adopter.

We also have partners in the Northeast who can help us facilitate adoptions and/or returns.

More about this rescue

Doggie Harmony was founded in Atlanta in 2009 by Liz Mansour and Jamie Sprague, a couple of neighbors seeking to help stray dogs that turned up locally.

From there, Doggie Harmony expanded to other neighborhoods and other people who found dogs and eventually, it was realized that nearly every neighborhood in Georgia found strays, most of which ended up in our grossly over-populated county shelters. With an estimated 300,000 unwanted pets destroyed yearly in Georgia shelters, we realized we had to find more homes to put them in.

In 2012, we began building partnerships with northeastern rescues and developed a consistent process for matching our dogs to great people and delivering those dogs to their homes up there. To become even more self-sufficent and less burdensome on our northeastern friends, we decided to launch Doggie Harmony Northeast.
