My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

HOW TO ADOPT: This animal is available for adoption by appointment. To schedule a time to meet this animal, please email meetme@arl-iowa.org.

---

- Took a day or two to settle into his foster home, and that is totally normal for him; his foster family said after the first few days he began to relax, and now he loves to curl up in the recliner or in his foster family's bed on a pile of blankets and chill

- In his foster home, he'll come down for breakfast then head back upstairs to snooze for a while until it's time to go for a walk; has energetic moments, but once he settles, his foster family has found that he's a very calm guy

- Still learning about personal space when he's feeling cuddly; likes to nose his way in under your arm or be in your lap or right next to you in bed

- Named after Dug, the dog from "Up"; embodies that energy: a goober, very loyal, easily distracted at times and lovable

- Loves walks and will dance around shifting his weight on his front paws in anticipation, then spin and head for the door when he knows it's time to go

- Can be a puller on a leash, so he does best with a harness; overall does well on walks but will do best with someone who understands his drive to chase things like wildlife, small animals or other things that zip past him quickly and can be alert for things like that and work with him on redirection

- Loves to stare out the window and let you know when people are passing by

- Can have some uncertainty around new people, and it may take a while for him to let his guard down; looking for a family who will treat him with understanding and allow him to make friends at his own pace

- Has been mostly housetrained in his foster home and is good about going outside when he's let out; just remember that any dog may need time to get used to a new schedule

- Can be socially awkward and a bit of a rowdy player with other dogs; will do best with slow introductions and may do better with some dogs than others (dog intro recommended)

- Busy, noisy, active kids can be too much for him, so he's looking for a more mature home

- Needs a home with no cats and no small animals

This pet qualifies for our 7-day Foster-to-Adopt program. If you're interested in fostering to adopt, please reach out to fosterinquiry@arl-iowa.org.

All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)

The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label.
