My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Timmy - 9 months & 11lbs (as of 10/15), Chi Mix, Neutered
Estimated around 13lbs full grown

This puppy is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org.

Their Foster Parent Says: "When I say that Timmy had me falling absolutely head over heels in LOVE with him in less than 2 hours... He is an absolute delight and the MOST delicious little boy I've ever laid eyes on. He is gentle and sweet, curious and excited, and the most perfect blend of chill and fun. I truly don't know what more anyone could ask for. He's potty trained, sleeps through the night, doesn't bark, and hasn't chewed anything in my apartment (except his toys, as he should! He loves chewing toys). When he came to me, I was warned that he was timid and scared easily (which is true), but every day I have watched him challenge himself and become braver. I'm so proud of his progress. He will follow me around my apartment and offer up several kisses and hugs, which is wild because he was pretty terrified of kisses at first. (CUDDLE SHOULD BE HIS MIDDLE NAME THOUGH. He is the sweetest soul for anyone in search of a snuggly little bug.) At the same time, he will also initiate playtime with my 9 year old dog when he gets his zoomies and follow her lead on all our walks; it has been so sweet watching him look to her for guidance. It seems like she's helped him realize the world isn't such a scary place. With that being said, I would definitely recommend a home in a quieter neighborhood (and with a dog, if possible -- especially one that's not super timid, so he can continue to learn from them). For a dog that's so shy, he has been very quick to trust and love and make his way into my heart, so he is the most deserving of a home that will give him all that love right back. He enjoys exploring and sniffing everything on our daily walks (and we have even been able to increase his longer walk of the day to about 60-75 mins). Sometimes we pass a dog on the street that will give him some anxiety, so he may briefly growl a little bit, but otherwise, we can usually walk by them relatively easily. And it may be a challenge teaching him some basic commands like "sit," because he gets a bit overwhelmed and backs up if you reach your arm out at him too quickly. So I'd recommend a family who can be gentle and patient with him for that stuff and who will be very present for him (because even though he's shy, he definitely LOVES his human(s)). All in all, I truly cannot say enough positive things about his behavior, personality, and stunning good looks. He's a charmer, and whoever adopts him is quite simply the luckiest."

Level of dog ownership experience needed:
INTERMEDIATE: As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it’s also  tremendous work. Puppies’ personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they’re a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup’s evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult.

POTTY TRAINING - At this point, I don't even have pee pads out (I left them out the first couple days, but he never used them and he had no accidents). So I would definitely say he's potty trained!
Yes – Few or no accidents

COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERS - He's definitely been shy around the few friends I've introduced him to, but he's not hiding or anything. He just tends to stay close to me (if we're in my apt, he'll come sit by me), or if we've been outside, he'll just sit in my lap or lean back into my arms). But he's not avoiding the new people altogether - he seems to be curious, and I'm sure with enough constant socialization he will open up with time.

BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN (always requires adult supervision) - Would be okay in a home with respectful teenagers and older.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGS - In my house, he's been nothing but amazing around my dog (and she's been gentle and kind to him, as well, which has been great!). He definitely looks up to her and looks to her for guidance and wants to be near her a lot, so I think he would do VERY well in a home with another dog(s) (I think it would be especially helpful for him so he can get out of his shell even more). On our walks, there have been a few bigger dogs that have gotten him nervous, but he did stop and give a dog a few kisses today! I was very impressed!

SOCIAL WITH CATS?
Yes. Almost all puppies have the potential to be friends with a cat. It’s on the adopter to know their cat’s temperament and preferences and to teach their puppy respectful manners.

MOUTHY BEHAVIOR - On the rare occasion he will try to put my fingers in his mouth when we're cuddling (BUT it's not in a teething or trying to bite me type of way - it's always been very gentle and VERY brief). He hasn't really chewed anything major in my home that he isn't supposed to (he did pick up a coaster and nibbled on that for a minute, but that's about it). Past this stage– Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in their mouth that aren’t food. Doesn’t try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime

SEPARATION ANXIETY (Please leave your foster dog home alone every day for at least 20 minutes.)Adjusting – Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone otherwise.

LEASH MANNERS - I would say he pulls a little at times or gets a bit scared by a noise and will abruptly stop walking or hop to a side or something. But all in all, I'd say he's pretty good on the leash and we're working on increasing the length of our walks. We've had a few that were 60-90 mins, and he has been loving them! Getting the hang of it – Probably hasn’t been on a leash much in their life but figuring it out. Might be a mild puller but responds to correction.

CUDDLE BUG LEVEL - I would say he is VERY snuggly and cuddly - I would say somewhere between medium and high depending on the day/time. We were initially having him sleep in his little bed on the ground next to my bed (where I sleep with my dog), and the past couple nights he's hopped up into my bed and slept with us there. He likes to come cuddle on the couch with me as well, but I also leave his bed on my couch during the day, so he'll cuddle up in there a lot as well.

JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLO - I think because of his shyness and being easily spooked, he hasn't yet explored jumping on people or dogs, but he does jump on me when I come home out of excitedness. For other people though, it's usually very calm! He definitely follows me around the house though!

Calm Greetings – Doesn’t jump up on people or dogs. Always all four on the floor.

CRATE TRAINING - I wasn't given a crate when I picked up Timmy, so we've been just going with it and letting him free in the apartment, even when I leave. So far, this has not been an issue

How this dog ended up with Social Tees:
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.
