My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Toro is a gentle soul who’s been through far more than any dog should. At 5 years old, this pit mix was found tied to a post, a t-shirt painfully stretched over the terrible injuries on his back. Thanks to loving care and time, Toro is now fully healed — though he carries a few scars as quiet reminders of the mistreatment he endured.

Despite it all, he has held onto his loving heart and calm spirit. He walks beautifully on leash at a mild pace and is happiest when he's lying down with his favorite ball or soaking up scratches from a kind hand. Toro knows how to sit, takes treats with care, and seems to be housebroken. He greets people with a warm tail wag and a mellow, trusting presence — a true gentle giant.

He enjoys quiet pleasures like a dip in the kiddie pool or just hanging out with the people he loves. Toro would thrive as the only dog in a home, not because he doesn’t love — but because he’s earned a peaceful life all to himself.

After everything he’s endured, Toro is ready for a forever home filled with love, safety, and the dignity he’s always deserved. He is available for adoption in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process is a couple of steps.

We ask you to begin by filling out an adoption application to express your interest in any of our animals. Once we receive the application and looked it over, we will contact you to answer any questions you may have about the pet and set up a meet and greet with the 4 legged friend you are interested in.

At that point, if you are interested in moving forward with the adoption, we will conduct a home check to make sure everything's good. We will ask you to sign an adoption agreement and ask for a donation for the adoption process.

More about this rescue

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation was founded by Nancy and Katherine Heigl to celebrate the memory of a wonderful son and brother. In 1986, Jason was killed in a car accident. He was only fifteen years old.

Throughout his brief lifetime Jason loved all animals, especially dogs and cats and monkeys. He lived his life extending compassion and kindness to all creatures great and small. This foundation is his legacy.

The mission of the JDHF is to eliminate the needless suffering inflicted on animals by human cruelty, indifference, and ignorance. Our primary focus is the greater Los Angeles area, for now.

In pursuit of our mission, the JDHF routinely funds:

Our internal rescue group, the Heigl Hounds of Hope.
Other qualified rescue groups, via Networking donations.
The Transport of LA shelter dogs to states with great demand.
Free Spay Neuter procedures for the pets of qualified caretakers.
Compassion Education programs.
And we thank you for your support.
