My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We primarily pull from shelters in the middle of nowhere, rural Florida. Underfunded and overburdened. Now matter how different these shelters are in size or location one thing remains the same - they are usually riddled with hound dogs at risk. Most of the hounds we see are in horrific condition after being used and abused as hunting dogs before being tossed aside for being too old, and even young adults for not being good at their “job”. Almost every trip to the shelter ends with a hound (or two) in our backseat because we’re a sucker for their floppy ears and trusting eyes despite how humans have treated them in the past. It’s obvious that most of these dogs have never experienced time in a home, and we are always so excited to show them just how wonderful life can be.
Peggy Sue’s story is different from most of the hounds we meet - she HAD a family and a home. And yet, she was STILL left behind like she was nothing, abandoned on their property until animal control found her. We took one look at her sparkly eyes, adorable overbite, and nubby tail, and the rest was history.
Peggy is thriving in her foster home, impressing them the second she walked through the door. She is house broken (this is so rare for our hounds, you have no idea ), crate trained, and rarely barks (also super rare as a houndy ). She is dog friendly, loves people, and content to just lounge around on a comfy couch or bed all day. Until feeding time of course, then she’ll be laying in the kitchen instead. Girlie does love a dirt patch though, she’ll dig her own little mound of dirt and then plop right down like she’s laying on a queen mattress.
Peggy is ready to find her true forever humans, a family that will love her forever and never abandon her. She is roughly 7 years old and fit as a fiddle! Adopt happiness, adopt Peggy Sue

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

When you adopt a dog from Swamp Haven, you’re not just saving a life. You’re beginning a journey filled with love, loyalty and trust. Life can be busy and stressful. The companionship of a dog is a constant reminder to slow down and enjoy the little things. At Swamp Haven, our mission isn’t to just help down-on-their-luck dogs find their forever homes. Our mission is to create a lasting relationship with you and your family.
Adopt happiness. Our adoption process is unique in that we work with you every step of the way to ensure that we’re placing the right dog with the right family. First, chat with us about what you’re looking for in a dog and we will set up a time for you to meet the lucky pup. From there, fill out an application. Once reviewed we set up a time to bring your potential pup to your house for a home visit and trial week. We want to make sure it’s the right fit for both your family and the dog involved. We will be totally available during the trial week for any questions or concerns. The last step is to finalize the adoption. And then congrats, you’re a new member of the Swamp Haven family and your happy tail has just begun!

Our adoption fee is $350

More about this rescue

Swamp Haven is an animal rescue organization that takes down-on-their-luck dogs and nurtures them back to a healthy mental and physical state, so they can find their forever home. Our goal is simple. We save innocent dogs that have been overlooked by society and provide short-term care including vetting (vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip and heartworm and flea prevention) and training to learn how to walk politely on a leash, play in a pack and live calmly and lovingly in their new home.
