My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Bear was a stray last winter, in bad shape. A Good Samaritan took him to her vet, where he was stabilized and diagnosed. His combo test came back positive for FIV, and he needed a full- mouth extraction to remove his rotted teeth. This cat is now in great shape, and has taken over the leadership role in our FIV room. To adopt Bearcat, he must either be the only cat, or other cats must also be FIV+. Safe Shelter adopts to within an hour of Artemas PA. Bear is an extremely affectionate cat. He gets along fine with other cats, though a bit on the dominant side. His age is estimated as about 6. He is neutered and current on shots. 240 522 7416 for more information.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Potential adopters physically meet the animal, and me. The person or couple is interviewed in person, a vet reference is checked (if possible), and I visit the home, tour inside and outside, ask any additional questions necessary, meet any live-in family members yet unmet, and sleep on my final decision. The next day I will call with a decision - either way. The adoption fee for a dog is $100, for a cat, $40. The adoption contract includes a takeback policy - in effect for the entire life of the animal- and the right to visit, with notice, and to raclaim the animal in the case of neglect or abuse.

Go meet their pets

I generally will bring a cat to the person for a meet-and-greet. Dog applicants come here, to the rescue, to meet.

More about this shelter

Safe Shelter has been up and running for 22 years. I worked for a year at a large, long-running, widely respected no-kill shelter and this inspired me to try it myself. It is a small, low-budget operation that could really use some volunteer and foster help!
