Meet Bam — a handsome, all-black cat with stunning golden eyes and a heart full of resilience. At 7 years old, Bam has already been through quite the journey. He came to the Kaua‘i Humane Society with an old, badly injured front leg. At first, he was scared and unsure of people — who could blame him? But with time, patience, and lots of love from our veterinary team and staff, Bam began to trust again.
His injured leg wasn’t usable anymore, so our team made the decision to amputate it — and that’s when Bam’s new chapter began. Now fully healed, Bam is thriving! He loves gentle pets, chin scratches, and soaking up affection from everyone who stops by to say Aloha.
Don’t let his three legs fool you — Bam gets around just fine and has a big, loving personality to match his tall, sleek frame. He’s ready for his second chance at life and can’t wait to find an ‘Ohana who will love him for the strong, sweet survivor he is.

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.
The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.
Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.
In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
