11/19/25 - Riley is doing great!! He is still maintaining his blood sugar on his own. He now gets fed 3 times a day and is doing well. He is getting Vitamin B shots monthly and still on prescription food, but will be able to transition to another food at some point. Just taking time to make sure everything is working as it should for his tiny little body. We had also found out he has a small open fontanelle on his head, which is a hole in the skull or soft spot. He is not having any issues right now, but it can lead to neurological issues like hydrocephalus. It is also possible he may never have any issues from it. He also has a slight curve in his spine and bad knees. Bad knees are very typical in yorkies. Being he is a puppy and their bones are not fully fused until a year or so, there is nothing to do about them at this time.
He is up to 2.6 pounds and has LOTS of puppy energy. He plays with toys, chews on bones, and plays with fellow fosters. We are still working on the house training. He will sometimes use pee pads, but other times will just pee wherever he is. He has not learned to ask to go outside yet, but will do his jobs when taken out. He can also be vocal and is not afraid to let you know he is not happy about something. When the dogtor feels he is ready for shots and his neuter, then we will proceed with getting those done. For now we will continue to monitor and make sure he is good.
9/6/25 - Riley is doing fantastic! His body is finally regulating the blood sugar on its own. He is licking his dish clean at every feeding. He still eats every four hours, including through the night. He is acting more and more like a typical puppy. He has the zoomies, lets you know when he wants something, and even yells at the other pups in the foster home if he is frustrated with them. This week he needs to go in for a fecal and bloodwork recheck. At some point in the future he will need shots and to be neutered, but we are a ways away for those things. We need to make sure everything is ok before doing any of that. But for now, he is doing great and becoming the puppy he should be!
8/24/25 - Riley is still in the ICU. The past few days he would eat little bits throughout the day and his BG was in the 120s. Then each day around dinner time he would not want to eat and his BG had dropped into the 60s or 70s. At the same time he was on fluids with dextrose in it to help keep it up. They attempted to decrease the amount of dextrose and he dropped down into the 50s, so they went back up. They decided to do a bile acids test to check for liver shunt, but the results will not be back until possibly Tuesday. Liver shunts in puppies can cause hypoglycemia. They have added in a couple other meds in case there is something GI related that they are not seeing that could cause this. So unfortunately we do not have any definitive answers yet, but he is in good hands getting around the clock care until it can be figured out. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers!
8/22/2025 - Poor little, almost 15-week-old, Riley can use all the prayers and good thoughts he can get. He was originally surrendered to a rescue in Missouri saying it was because of luxating Patellas, but when the rescue got him to their vet, he was extremely lethargic with diarrhea. They did some tests to rule out Parvo and check for worms/parasites. They started him on fluids, dextrose, and a de-wormer and later added in an antibiotic. His ammonia levels were slightly elevated, so they did an ultrasound to look for a liver shunt but did not find one. Riley is unable to regulate his blood sugar on his own, so he is having to be supplemented to keep it up. He has not been wanting to eat much either. He is currently at our specialist getting care and being monitored to make sure his blood sugar stays up and they are working to get him eating better too. We are hoping as he starts to eat better that maybe his body will start to regulate on its own. We are not ruling out that he may have a liver shunt as well, but for now our priorty is his blood sugar and to monitor bloodwork and activity for anything that might suggest another health issue. We are hopeful this is something he can overcome and become the puppy he should be.

Yorkie Haven Rescue Group is an approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit and was founded in 2006. Our caring volunteers share their many talents to ensure that all yorkies we rescue from "throwaway land" are safe and can live their lives in a loving, healthy and safe environment - a haven where they will be forever loved.
We have a wonderful base of volunteers located throughout the United States, have no paid staff and are funded solely by kind donations from the public. Before any rescue is placed in a forever home, the pup is spayed/neutered, heartworm checked and made current on all vaccines.
