My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Roxanne (aka Roxie, aka baby girl)!

Roxanne is a 2 year-old, 50 lb mixed breed, possibly Hound, Black Mouth Cur, Shepherd, and we have had several other guesses...all we know for sure is that she is full of kisses and snuggles. She’s gentle, a little reserved at first, but once she feels safe with you, she warms up. She’s incredibly affectionate and full of life. You can tell by the small rip in her ear that she hasn’t had the easiest life - but she’s a survivor, somehow still wants to love, and doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.

Roxanne is an independent dog and can play by herself, but she also gets along great and is submissive with all dogs. She would love you that much more if you gave her a squeaky toy (the squeakier the better).

Roxanne is potty trained and will let you know when she needs to go outside. She also is super smart and will be a breeze to train with the right time and dedication, as she learned “down” in about 10 minutes. Although she loves her crate to sleep in, we are still working on closing the crate door for longer periods of time. She’s doing great on leash walks—though she may need some positive words of encouragement to help her be brave and distract her from wanting to go back home.

Roxanne eats two meals a day, has a standard bathroom schedule, enjoys treats (read: cheese), and thrives on affection and routine.

Roxanne would do best in a home that offers room to run around with her squeaky toys, gentle guidance, and plenty of love.

If you’re looking for a sweet and goofy girl who’s growing more confident every day, Roxanne could be the perfect fit.

Our standard adoption fee is $375 if paid by cash or check, or $385 if paid by credit card (which includes a $10 processing fee). This fee covers spay/neuter surgery when age appropriate at one of our participating veterinarians, age-appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative, and microchipping.

In order to be considered for adoption, we require a fully completed application, a phone interview, and a meet-and-greet with your entire family. Please note that submitting an application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee approval—it simply allows us to begin the review process.

If you are interested in adopting or would like additional information, please email us at adopt@safehavendogsIL.org to request an application.

Keep in mind that the breed and size listed in each dog's biography are our best educated guesses and are not guaranteed.

Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse the adoption of any dog or puppy to any applicant for any reason.

More about this rescue

We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.

The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.

Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.

While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.

We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
