My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hey there, Merk here! Its been nearly 300 days since I've had a place to call my own, and I am SO ready for my journey to continue with someone by my side!

You like quirky? I'm your man! I have loads of personality with enough to go around, and I hope my new people have just as much of a sparkle to them as I do!
My ideal home would feature an experienced and savvy guardian who can celebrate my uniqueness and help guide me into my very best self. I do tend to sing tales of the opera to my audience, and have been known to gossip about my adventures to all who listen. I adore bum rubs and affection, and will lean all my body into you for just the riiigghhtt spot.

This place is a bit tough for a guy like me, and I find myself a bit out of sorts some days and have a rough time settling down. A guardian who understands and can guide me with positive reinforcement to help collect myself in moments of chaos would be ideal. I try so hard to be cool and collected, but my instincts get the better of me at times and I just got to tell the world what I think, and race around while I do so! I used to hit the trails with my old fam, so I thrive in the outdoor lifestyle and would be best with someone active who wants to be #adventurebuddies together.

I know it can be a lot of ask of someone, but I would prefer a home as the only pet as I struggle with calm and positive introductions, and find others do not appreciate my forwardness and loud tales. Some canines apparently don't appreciate being talked to loudly in their face?? So weird?!? I thought that was how we did it!!! My friends at the center have informed me otherwise however, so Im trying to reel it back a smidge and am working really hard on keeping my cool near others.

Although I come with a few extra asks, I have so much affection and fun to offer the right people. I am the type who never says no to adventure, and will make you feel like youre the only one in the world with my famous sweet guy attitude and very scratchable bum! Let me show you just how special I am!

The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Through its locations and operations across the province the BC SPCA provides emergency medical care and sheltering for more than 37,000 animals each year. The society also conducts more than 4,600 cruelty investigations and provides a wide range of advocacy and education programs for domestic, farm and wild animals through its Provincial Office.

Our mission, vision and charter is at the heart of all we do to rescue, protect and care for animals. It is also the driving force behind our animal welfare and education programs.

    Our Charter:

The BC SPCA Charter is the foundation that guides the work we do:

    Whereas:

The world is inhabited by many species sharing a common ecosystem of air, earth, and water. We recognize and value our interconnectedness with all animals.

    Therefore:

The BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for the animals of the world we share.

We pledge our energies to inspire and mobilize society to create a world in which all animals, who depend on humans for their well-being, experience, as a minimum, five essential freedoms:

    1. Freedom from hunger and thirst

    2. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease

    3. Freedom from distress

    4. Freedom from discomfort

    5. Freedom to express behaviours that promote well-being.
