He is darkness, he is the night, he is…..Kumamoto-man.
This handsome boy is a playful, low energy, 4 years old, about 12lbs, and will be the best investigator and bodyguard you will ever need. Kumamoto likes nothing more than to follow those in the house - to not only investigate everything they are doing, but to make sure they make it to their destination safe and sound. Like many in the world today, this Big Guy takes kitty Prozac to help regulate his responses and has found to be a happier kitty with less stress when on it. Cant we all relate? (this writer included) While Kumamoto is mostly human friendly and will go up to strangers for their initial scope out, he often prefers his personal space and his feet on the ground, so a household with older kids or no kids would be best. While we are constantly working on his teeth and claw manners, he often gets over stimulated easily and needs space and someone to listen to him when he sets his boundaries. Despite not being a super affectionate guy, Kumamoto is almost always found in his security spots just watching over his household or next to his human on her desk watching the window while she works. Kumamoto is never far away and will constantly check up on his charges. This pro bodyguard takes his job seriously and will never let anything keep him from his duty – so don’t expect closed doors to stop his tenacity to be in the heart of any action. Due to his constant surveillance at the shelter before reaching his foster home and being more human focused, he would do well in a home with a neutral dog in the home and would be happy in a home with neutral or accommodating cats so he doesn’t get lonely. Kumomoto enjoys his foster families’ kittens after some thorough introduction time and a few hisses. Big Guy acts tough to assert his space, but now he enjoys playing with his foster kitty friends every day and can be found loafing around near them or giving them baths like the good kitten foster dad he is. He would do well with a household that honors his job and knows when to give him his time to himself and when to reward him with chin scratches. His purpose is to love from afar, protect, to watch over his family, and to observe the household. You are not just adopting the best investigator or cat guard you can get but a true family member who will leave a lasting impression with his purrs and caretaker purpose. His love comes in a different package that doesn’t always include cuddling, but you can feel it with the amount of attention he gives to his person.
Kumamoto is not just his purpose; he also has some lovable quirks:
- He loves to ‘tuck’ his humans in at night with his biscuits and will stand watch on your feet throughout the night while you sleep, doing his job and keeping you safe.
- Kumamoto is treat motivated and trainable. He comes when you pat a space and knows some basic commands.
- He has an odd fondness for bubble wrap and may be found licking any plastic that he finds.
- Kumamoto is a mirror, however you behave towards him is how he will react to you. We are working on a calming environment for him and rewarding good behavior where he keeps his teeth and claws to himself. He will need a home that can keep calm when he starts his shenanigans and redirect when he is feeling his feelings to a more productive interaction.
- He is not a fan of cuddling but will never be far away so you will never feel lonely. He will always be there when you sleep, watching over you and making sure you are safe.
- Kumomoto is playful in short bursts and likes to chase shadows around the house

More about this shelter
Soul Dog is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue organization founded with the mission to spay/neuter and protect animals. We are currently a small group of committed volunteers making a difference in the life of one animal at a time. As an all volunteer administration, all donations made to Soul Dog go directly to improving the health of the pets that share our lives.
Soul Dog is proactive in animal welfare advancing the need for spaying and neutering our pets to reduce overpopulation. We travel to rural communities on Native American reservations, where spaying and neutering will only happen if it is nearly free or very convenient. Soul Dog works with volunteer veterinarians to provide the spaying and neutering service at no cost to the public. Donations are used to defray the costs associated with medications, supplies, and the operating cost for clinics.
