My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Xena didn’t arrive with a wagging tail or a ready-made grin. She came to Animal Aid Society from an overcrowded shelter, unsure of people, unsure of noise, unsure of the world. Those first days, she moved like a shadow trying not to be seen. But shadows don’t stay shadows forever.
Now? Now Xena is in the middle of her becoming.
When it’s time to leave her run, she doesn’t just step out, she bursts forth. She's 29 pounds of gleeful chaos, limbs flying in sixteen directions at once (yes, she only has four legs, no, physics cannot explain her). She dashes past you and flashes a drive-by smile. Stay still long enough and you’ll get a drive-by nose boop, too.
She wants to love people so badly she can barely contain her joy. She’s still learning that the world is safe, and she checks in with her humans like a kid learning to swim, but every day the hesitation fades and the sparkle gets brighter. Give her patience and a gentle routine, and she will give you loyalty, laughter, and a future full of tail-thumping triumphs.
Right now, the big outside world is still scary, so Xena needs a home with a fenced yard where she can practice her confidence without the pressure of busy sidewalks or unpredictable noises. She’ll get there. She just needs someone willing to celebrate the small victories.
Xena is heartworm-positive, but don’t let that stop you. Animal Aid Society covers the full cost of treatment, even after you take her home. Come meet her. Fall in love with her unpolished magic. Help her finish her transformation from scared shelter dog to beloved family member.
Xena needs a person or family to be her sunshine, because shadows don’t stay shadows once the light finally finds them.
Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. You can visit Xena any day from 9am to noon, including weekends and holidays.
*Needs a home with a securely fenced yard.

Additional adoption info

If all goes well and you decide to pursue adoption, you will be asked to complete a pre-adopt. Once your family, including any dogs, have also met with the dog you wish to adopt, your application will be submitted to the Adoption Committee for review. We estimate the pre-adoption process can take up to 14 days or longer.

Please note: AAS is committed to finding the best fit for each of our dogs. For this reason, we will accept multiple applications for a dog. In the case of multiple applications, we will select the applicant that is the best fit based on the needs of the dog.

Adoption fee for puppy/adult dogs is $300.00.
Adoption fee for senior dogs is $150.00.

Dogs qualify as a senior based on their stature/weight and age. The scale below shows the age at which a dog attains “senior” designation:

0-20 lbs: 11 years
21-50: 10 years
51-90: 8 years
91+: 7 years
