This helps El Paso County Canine Rescue with pet care costs.
Ben is an absolute cuddle bug! He loves to be hugged and snuggled and pet. He will lay in your lap while you take care of and wrap his legs. He is tolerant of bathing and care. He does have feeling/some nerve pain in both hind feet, so expect them to twitch during wrapping. He also may require pain medication.
Ben’s paralysis does not slow him down! He is playful and energetic and wants to be your best friend. He wants to be close to people at all times, and go with you everywhere. He moves fast, is agile and will go down stairs, so do not expect a sedentary pet with Ben. Because of this, he needs protection on his hind legs with light bandaging and socks at all times. Pool noodles or pipe insulating foam help with this also.
Ben excels in his cart outside! He can keep up with people and dogs, and is able to lay down in it when he gets tired. He gets excited for car rides. Tennis balls and toys are definitely his thing! He loves playing with and chewing the heck out of toys! He is possessive of his toys, so be aware of that with other dogs. He does enjoy the company of other dogs, but also likes to steal all the attention. He cannot communicate through normal body language to other dogs, so he can be awkward when he comes running up to them. It might take a little time for animals to get used to him dragging his legs.
Ben is NOT a low maintenance pet. Besides the bandaging/leg protection, he will need to be picked up and carried at times. He weighs 35lbs now and is very awkward to lift as it is all in his upper half. He needs to wear a diaper (baby diaper size 5 works perfectly) and will require his bladder to be manually emptied by his owner several times a day. He is prone to UTI’s. Ben also cannot control his bowels. Be aware he will have accidents and make messes. This is Ben forever, it is not temporary. This dog is an amazing companion, and absolutely worth the work, but requires a very special family to meet his needs!!
