My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You’ve heard of Polly Pocket, but have you met Polly the pocket pittie! This adorable pup is just 1 year and 4 months old and weighs just a little over 43lbs. Polly has been with us since the beginning of September and while it was obvious that she had a difficult start to life, that has not stopped her from dreaming of a beautiful future. Now all she is missing is you!

Polly`s foster wants to share notes about how she is settling into a home: “Polly would thrive with a guardian with some experience setting regular household boundaries, someone who likes to hike/bike/walk regularly, and would benefit with a confident and tolerant adult dog to model appropriate behavior. She is actually quite sensitive to her human and wants to listen and be a good girl. Some notable milestones include: Sufficient- pottying outside, resting in her exercise pen, settling quietly into her crate at night and during the workday (if you start her out with a frozen Kong type treat). Highly achieved -hikes/walks on a long line, sprinting and wrestling with her foster brother, rides well in the car, loads up like a champ, a good run or walk then a good nap afterward! In-progress (and going very well!) learning what are toys and what aren’t toys, approaching new dogs with lower energy, respecting other dogs’ boundaries, how to greet a new person.`

Polly’s adoption fee is paid by Nina Otero Community School, and a Special Thanks to Mrs. Vigil class forth grade class! This is Deeply appreciated from all of us at the shelter! She is spayed and microchipped and has age-appropriate vaccinations. A licensing/microchip fee may apply. If you would like to meet her email newhope@sfhumanesociety.org.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

If you have made the careful decision to bring a companion animal into your life, chances are that SFAS&HS has a dog, cat, kitten, puppy, ferret, rabbit, guinea pig, or other fuzzy critter that will match your home and lifestyle.

Matchmaking is an important part of our adoption process, and we pride ourselves on helping hopeful animal lovers find a companion that will fit their lifestyle. Think about how much time you have to spend with a new animal. Think about the time involved: a healthy puppy can live for 15 to 20 years! Remember that settling in a new four-legged family member can take some time and adjustment. Bear in mind that just like us, your companion animal will need food and supplies and have to visit a doctor from time to time.

We invite you to visit our animals in the shelter, at our satellite adoption facility inside PetsMart (3561 Zafarano Drive) or online.Once you have an idea what you’re looking for, one of our adoption counselors will visit with you and share some ideas about which of our residents would be best suited to you.

All animals are spayed or neutered before leaving and receive the required age-appropriate vaccines. The required licenses for city and county residents are available at the shelter as you adopt!

Adoption is a partnership between the adopter, the shelter and the animal. We are committed to making that partnership work for everyone.

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society is the largest animal shelter and care facility in northern New Mexico. More than 6,000 lost, stray, abandoned or injured animals come through our doors each year. As a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we receive nearly all of our funding through private donors in our community and beyond. SFAS&HS contracts with the city and county of Santa Fe to care for homeless and stray animals, as well as those brought through our front doors.

We work to reunite people with their lost animal companions, and re-home those animals that have gone unclaimed into new homes through our adoption program. Low- and no-cost spay/neuter programs address the overpopulation problems that our community faces. Humane education programs in our local schools teach children to respect and care for all living creatures. Partnered with our community, we work for change in the lives of our companion animals and to end the suffering of all animals.
