My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet our special boy Java!

Java was found in Caldwell with his siblings Espresso, Cappuccino, and Beanward. When he first arrived at the shelter as a bottle baby, we found that he had mild pectus excavatum (a condition where the ribcage is formed slightly abnormally), but he appeared to be an otherwise healthy baby! His start was not an easy one however, and as time went on despite constant round-the-clock care and feedings from his foster mom Java struggled to put on weight and was not progressing as rapidly as his siblings. He ended up being around half the size of his siblings but ate twice as much and began to show signs of neurological impairment.

After many vet visits and lots of diagnostics, our vets discovered that Java has a liver abnormality and were able to start him a diet and course of treatment that is working well for him, and our little man is finally growing! He'll need some follow-up imaging once he's a little bigger to determine whether his issues are the result of a liver shunt that would need to be surgically corrected, and until then he's spending his time wreaking havoc in a foster home!

He is a total nut (even for a kitten) and very goofy, but you really can't help but fall in love with him when you meet him. He doesn't have great vision in his left eye and functions at 100% speed only, so running into things is kind of a constant for him! He loves other cats and kittens and is learning to love his foster mom's dog too. Java does tend to put his all into playtime, so any other pets in the home would have to be down for lots of physical play.

He has already been through so much in his short life, and has managed to survive and thrive despite being so ill for so long as a baby. He's so full of personality and love for people, and he really does bring so much joy to every staff, volunteer, and even doctor he's met. His current foster mom describes him as a kitten with zero personal space, who likes to snuggle up right under her chin and sometimes even burrows into her hair.

If you're looking for a new lifelong buddy, please consider meeting Java! He has his quirks, but we are positive that he is going to return every bit of love you give him tenfold, and will never ever fail to crack you up & make your day a little brighter!

If you would like to know more about Java's condition, please feel free to reach out to us at adoptlove@rbari.org

More about this shelter

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. is founded on the belief that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care and safe shelter. Due to overpopulation, there are insufficient homes for most cats and dogs. Some are lucky enough to find temporary shelter and a few even find permanent homes. However it is a devastating fact that the majority are either euthanized or forced to chance life without shelter.

To support our belief and to relieve the unnecessary suffering of animals, we shall:
1.Extend every effort to find, evaluate, and secure good adoptive homes for animals in our care.
2.Provide animals with medical services and behavior therapy to the extent of our ability.
3.Adhere to a “no-kill” policy: animals shall not be euthanized for the purpose of providing space for new animals.
4.Adhere to a 100% spay and neuter policy.
5.Maintain continuing humane education programs and in particular to schools.
