Dog Name: Charlie Barkin
Breed: Mix
Sex: Male
Age: 1
Weight: 42lbs
Medical needs: Charlie is heart worm positive. His treatment is covered by the rescue. Due to his upcoming heartworm treatments, his foster to adopt family must live within 1 hour of Milford, DE and be willing to bring him back there for his appointments.
Housebroken: Yes. Charlie has been on a consistent schedule and has done a great job with no accidents in the house.
Crate trained: Yes. Charlie LOVES his crate. He will put himself in for a treat and settles very quickly. He sleeps through the night in his crate quietly and is happy to relax in it when he’s home alone or when he’s feeling a little bit anxious.
Good in the car: Yes. He gets nervous about getting in and out, he typically needs to be picked up, but he settles in quickly.
Good on a leash: Yes, but he is not exactly your leisurely walk in the park kind of guy. Charlie LOVES to walk and sniff - and he has an agenda. Going on regular walks for exercise and engagement has been amazing for his confidence!
Energy level: High. He’s a young guy who has some anxiety and will struggle to settle if he isn’t getting his energy out. Regular exercise and training sessions to channel all that energy into productive activities creates a much calmer Charlie who will snooze hard at home!
Need a fenced in yard: No, but with his energy level he certainly would love to have space to sniff and explore. If no yard, he needs a home that is prepared for lots of very regular walks.
Dog Friendly: Yes. There are no other dogs in Charlie’s foster home, but he has done great with doggy friends that he has met on walks or field trips. He is very submissive at first, but opens up and enjoys bouncing and running with friends.
If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No, but a confident doggy friend might be really helpful.
Cat Friendly? Unknown, there are no cats in his foster home but there are a lot of neighborhood cats that he avoids at all costs.
Kid Friendly: Yes, he has met my two nieces (1.5 and 4) and he did well with them.
If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Any age with supervision. He loves kids but he is a long legged boy who likes to play. Especially if he gets the zooms, he could certainly knock a little one down in his path if they’re not old enough to be aware of his long flailing legs.
Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them?
Charlie is a very special boy who will thrive in a patient home. He is a bit of an anxious guy and takes some time to settle in and feel safe. He paces when he’s nervous, but that behavior continues to decrease (has almost stopped entirely now!) as he gets more comfortable in his foster home. A routine, plenty of exercise, and brain engagement have helped him start learning that it’s safe to rest. Outside of the home, he really depends on his person to help him feel confident in new places.
Charlie LOVES his crate and uses it as his safe space. If it’s open and available, he’ll tuck himself inside for a nap or to take a break when things feel overwhelming. Having a cozy crate set up and available for him will be important.
He may have some nerves, but with time, Charlie’s goofy, quirky personality comes out and will keep you laughing! He makes the funniest faces, gets the wildest zoomies, and gives just the most awkward cuddles that will melt your heart because, well, he is TRYING! In the right home that understands his needs and is willing to give him plenty of time to open up, this guy is going to blossom into someone’s absolute best friend - and he will love them endlessly for helping him!!
