My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Archie is one of those dogs that’s not popular. He’s not a popular breed/mix and no one has asked about him at all. He’s been there longer than any other dog at the shelter now, but we love him and believe in him! He’s not trained because he’s never had a home that cared enough to teach him anything. His puppyhood was probably stolen from him because he had to fend for himself. When he came into the shelter (as a stray on 8/22/25) he was in pitiful shape. Cuts, scrapes, wounds and areas of missing hair was all over his body. He was underweight. He was timid and didn't know what to do with toys. Now he’s finally getting some love and attention and doesn’t know what to do with it! He LOVES toys and his fur is now nice and soft. He's rambunctious and happy, young believed to be around a year old. He gets overexcited when he knows he’s going out of the shelter for a walk, but we can guarantee you this, he is sweet and friendly! He has gotten along with every dog he's met through the kennel and loves to give his "girlfriends" kisses. It’s dogs like Archie, an underdog, that can end up being one of the most loyal and loving dogs that anyone could ever want. Someone just has to love him enough and have the patience to teach him about life with humans. Take him home, bond with him, once he trusts you and feels at home, slowly start some training with him and make it fun. He loves treats and he love toys so that makes training a little easier!

Additional adoption info

Animals can be adopted to only approved homes. Application, vet references, personal references, etc. will be required. When feasible a home visit will also be done. Send us your email through a private message so we can email you an adoption application.

Dog Adoption fee: $150
Cat adoption $50

All animals are sterilized before adoption (Most of the time, if we have the funds and the time) and they are up to date on all core vaccines. If an animal is too young to sterilize, an agreement is signed that of age agreed upon the animal will be sterilized (at your expense unless discussed) and proof thereof provided to us. THIS IS STRICTLY ENFORCED or the animal will be returned back to us!

If you currently have any dogs we suggest to bring them to the shelter to meet the dog you are interested in and bring your family. NO DOGS ARE ADOPTED TO LIVE OUTSIDE! They must be adopted to become INSIDE beloved family members. For some dogs we require a fenced yard (this depends on the dog) we can discuss it.

Please message us on facebook for the fastest way to discuss adoption!

Our mission is to protect and shelter the stray, orphaned, abandoned, & unwanted animals of Bertie County, NC. We strive to place them into loving, furever homes. We also work closely with rescues and deeply value and appreciate these relationships.

Bertie County, NC is located in very rural, Northeastern NC. Our county shelter is open admission; however it is small, and does not currently have public visiting hours. To visit a dog or cat for adoption, please contact us and we will happily meet you at the shelter for a meet-and-greet with your potential new family member. Our intake & adoptions vary day to day, so it is very possible we may have dogs &/or cats available for adoption that are not yet featured here.

We receive no government funding, and rely solely on donation & contributions. It is with the support of the public’s generosity that allows us to find loving, forever homes or obtain rescue for our county shelter residents. All donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated.

We are always looking for animal lovers to share their time and talent as dedicated volunteers. The opportunities range from helping to socialize/play with the animals for adoption at the shelter to helping transport shelter residents to the vet or rescue. If you are interested in volunteering, please do not hesitate to contact us at 252-325-3647. We look forward to hearing from you.
