My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

It breaks our hearts to post this, but we’re looking to find a new home for our sweet girl, Penny. She’s an 8-month-old Great Pyrenees mix — with a little bit of Golden Retriever and Bloodhound. (her dad was 120 lbs and her mom about 90 lbs), so she’ll be a big, beautiful dog when fully grown.

Penny is loyal, intelligent, and loves being part of a family. She’s crate trained, knows basic commands, and enjoys enrichment activities like snuffle mats, fetch, and frozen treat toys. She has so much love and potential — she just needs the right environment to thrive.

Like many protective breeds, Penny can be a bit possessive of her food or special treats, especially in busy settings. We’ve been working through this with positive, consistent training, and she’s made great progress. She’ll do best with someone confident and experienced with large guardian breeds who can continue that structure and leadership.

We live in a suburban area, and it’s just not the ideal setting for her size and temperament. Penny would thrive most on a property or ranch with room to roam, where she can be outside more and feel relaxed.

She loves kids, but would do best with older children due to her high energy and size.

She is hesitant about other dogs and hasn’t been around them very much.

She’s healthy, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to bring joy to the right home. We truly love her and just want what’s best — a peaceful environment and someone who understands her breed and personality.

If you or someone you know might be a great fit for Penny, please reach out. We’re happy to share more about her routine, temperament, and the progress she’s made. ??

Additional adoption info

In the Central Valley, we have an over abundance of homeless and unwanted pets. There are simply too many companion animals and not enough homes! But you can help. One way to start putting an end to pet overpopulation is to adopt your next pet from the Central California SPCA. In doing so, you immediately give a home to an animal that didn’t have one, and you reduce the overall number of homeless pets in our community.

You are saving a life and enhancing your own. You are also helping to support the nearly 2,400 animals that come through our doors each year.

Please note that these are sheltered, homeless animals that are not always perfect in every way. They may need extra time to adjust or have unforeseen behavioral or medical problems. While we strive for successful placement by providing as healthy, well socialized animals as possible, we can only provide any history we have received, collected, or observed from staff or volunteers during their stay.
