My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Bentley —
Bentley is ready to steal your heart (and maybe your spot on the couch!). He’s an easygoing companion who asks for little more than a soft bed and a few head pats. His adorable quirks include sleeping with his head on a stuffy and sitting up like a little bear when he knows treats are coming. Bentley’s got a spa side—he adores jumping in the shower and getting toweled off like the prince he is.
Bentley gets along nicely with other dogs, though he appreciates calm friends. He’s beautifully house trained, crate trained, and sleeps soundly wherever he chooses. He loves car rides and would benefit from a ramp to help him in and out.

Coming to HHS with a hurt back, Bentley was protecting his body from painful pets. We figured out quickly Bentley needed medical intervention, and he's been resting on anti-inflammatories and making great progress. Bentley has some learned behavior from protecting his back, but quickly starts trusting once he knows you aren't going to hurt him. He has a few rules, including not being picked up so treat him like a big dog in a smaller body, and you’ll do great together!

Bentley enjoys leash walks, exploring new scents, and relaxing with his people. He’s a chill guy who would thrive in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate, and easy companion who will make every day a little softer and sweeter, Bentley is your boy.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Potential adopters are carefully screened to ensure we find the right forever home for the dogs and cats we rescue. Since animals live in foster homes, we get to know their personality and temperament. The adoption process allows us to learn about you, so that we can help find the perfect match for your home.

ADOPTION PROCESS

After finding a cat or dog that you are interested in, you'll need to complete an adoption application either online (https://henricohumane.org) or at an adoption stand. An adoption coordinator will review your application to ensure your situation matches the needs of the animal you're interested in. If completing an application online, please note, every question must be answered on the application for it to be reviewed by an adoption coordinator. As part of the review process, we'll request references. Because we are an all-volunteer organization, it may take up to 48 hours for an adoption coordinator to contact you.

ADOPTION FEES:
All of our adoption fee amounts can be found here:
https://www.henricohumane.org/adopt

The adoption fee covers the cost of shots, spay/neuter, microchipping and worm/flea treatments.

Go meet their pets

Adoption stands are held on Saturdays at Petco Short Pump (Next to Trader Joe's) minus major holiday weekends. Adoption stands are from 11-2 but please see our stand schedule for up to date information. (https://henricohumane.org/events/).

Please note that not all animals come to stand so if you are interested in a specific animal, please email dogs@henricohumane.org or cats@henricohumane.org on the Friday prior to stand. Thank you!

More about this rescue

Henrico Humane Society is an all-volunteer, foster-based,
non-profit organization that rescues dogs and cats from
across Central Virginia and places them in loving, forever
homes.

HHS has saved hundreds of animals each year since
1991. Many of the dogs and cats we rescue come from
shelters in rural areas where they have fewer adoption
opportunities. The majority of the animals in our care live
with foster parents until they find a permanent home.

We don't have a shelter and most of our animals live in foster homes until they're adopted, which allows us to get to know their personality and temperament. Applicants are carefully screened to ensure we find the right forever home for the dogs and cats we rescue. Our adoption process allows us to learn about potential adopters so we can help find the perfect matcher their home.
