Sweet little Kenny is one of the many dogs rescued from a puppy mill that is finally shutting down. Like so many from this heartbreaking situation, Kenny arrived in rough shape—under-socialized, scared, and unsure of the world around him.
Kenny is a 3-year-old Schnauzer weighing about 14 pounds. Before his rescue, his coat was so severely matted that he had to be completely shaved down—even his face and ears. His “before” photo says it all. But under all that neglect was a handsome, hopeful boy just waiting to shine.
Now, in foster care, Kenny is learning what life is supposed to feel like. A few months ago he was locked in a cage at a puppy mill… today he’s warm, safe, and soaking up little patches of sunshine like it’s the best thing in the world. It’s truly a joy to watch this boy transform.
The first week in his foster home, he was completely shut down—he’d quietly walk into his crate and just sit, because that was the only “normal” he had ever known. Now? His Schnauzer personality is starting to emerge. He paces, he gets a little hyper, he does his nervous little bark, and he follows his foster around the house. But when she turns around and looks at him, he still scoots back bashfully—wanting attention while also being a little unsure. It’s all part of him learning how to be a dog for the very first time.
Even though he’s 3 years old, Kenny often feels more like a puppy starting from scratch. He doesn’t love the crate anymore and will bark for a bit at bedtime before settling in, and again when the sun comes up. But he’s also learning new things every day—including leash walking, which he’s picking up quickly and doing wonderfully with thanks to patient, positive guidance.
Because of his background, a secure, fenced yard is still preferred for safe potty breaks and decompression time. A friendly, confident resident dog would also be a huge help in showing him the ropes and helping him continue to come out of his shell.
Kenny is ready for a calm, patient home that will celebrate each tiny milestone with him. Whoever adopts him will get the incredible gift of watching this sweet, nervous, wonderful boy continue to blossom into the companion he was always meant to be.
If you can offer Kenny the safe, loving forever home he deserves, please fill out an adoption application at www.bcaaofnj.org.
