My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Hodge
Female DSH white with brown tabby
Estimated DOB: 9/07/2023

About: Hodge is sweet and friendly. She will come up to you for pets once comfortable. She gets along with other cats but we are unsure about dogs.

Backstory: Hodge was part of a feral colony in Ohio. We were contacted by the person caring for the colony to see if we could take in any friendly cats. We took Hodge and 2 others, one of which was suffering from severe diarrhea.

Location: in foster

Medical: Hodge is FIV positive. Because of this, she needs a low stress environment, quality food, exams at least yearly and proactive veterinary care to ensure she stays healthy. Because she has a compromised immune system, she's not the type of cat that you try the "wait it out" approach if she's sick. Although FIV cats can be more prone to certain medical diseases, they more often than not live completely normal lives compared to their counterparts. As medicine has advanced, we now know that having FIV is not at all a death sentence like it had been treated as previously. These cats live comparable lives to non FIV positive cats and deserve a home and love all the same. We highly recommend finding a veterinarian who is comfortable with and knowledgeable about FIV. Depending on their clients, FIV may not be something that every veterinarian sees regularly in their practice, so it can be daunting and they may not be familiar with the most recent guidelines for FIV cats and how they can live normal and healthy lives.

You can learn more about FIV through the American Association of Feline Practitioners' Feline Retrovirus Management Guidelines or from the Feline Veterinary Medicine Association's website and brochures such as this one! https://catvets.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/FelineVMA_FeLV-and-FIV-Broch_Web.2.pdf

All cats are spayed/neutered, current on age appropriate vaccines (rabies and distemper), microchipped, given flea/tick prevention and dewormer, FIV/FeLV tested, and any other veterinary care that is needed prior to adoption.
