My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Zuri – Tiny Torti, Big Personality

If you’ve ever wanted a cat whose part sweetheart, part chaos goblin, and 100% entertainment, allow us to introduce Zuri. This pint-sized tortoiseshell is the definition of “torti-tude” and a textbook Sour Patch Cat—sweet, then a little spicy, then sweet again before you even know what happened.

Zuri is full of confidence, curiosity, and a constant chirpy purr. She adores being picked up and kissed… about 80% of the time. The other 20%? She’ll politely (okay, loudly) let you know she’s busy with zoomies or plotting world domination and cannot be disturbed. Respect her cuddle schedule and you’ll have a devoted, purring sidekick for life.

She’s also an undefeated feather toy champion, yoga mat wrestler (don’t ask), and once picked a fight with her own tail. She's always in the middle of the action. She rules her foster cat siblings—most of them four times her size—and somehow got them to agree to her terms without negotiation. She doesn't get flustered when they set boundaries with her.

At night, Zuri loves to sleep with her humans, sometimes purring right in your ear at 4 a.m. (out of love… probably). She’s good with other cats, endlessly entertaining, and will keep you laughing daily. Bonus: she recently outsmarted an entire transport plan just to stay in Texas and purr in her foster’s lap.

If you’re ready for a brave, hilarious, affectionate kitten who will keep life interesting (and keep you humble), Zuri is your girl.

More about this rescue

Animal Justice League (AJL) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt dog and cat rescue organization with a focus on the Oak Forest and Garden Oaks neighborhoods of Houston, TX. AJL was formed on January 27, 2015, but really, the work began long before then!

In a neighborhood that often serves as a dumping ground for unwanted animals, in a city that is overridden with homeless pets, and shelters that are at capacity, we saw a need and knew it was time to make a difference.

We rescue dogs off of the brutal streets of Houston, help care for those that are no longer wanted or cared for by their previous owners, and are registered to pull dogs and cats from the city, county, and nearby shelters. We also help reduce the community cat and kitten population through a robust TNR (trap, neuter, return) program.

Our mission is to reduce the homeless pet population through rescue, education, and outreach. Help us make our mission a reality!
