My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Fig & Vanilla – Sisters, Soulmates, and Champions of the One-Eyed Club

Fig and Vanilla are a bonded pair of sisters with only one eye between them—but don’t tell them that. They have absolutely no idea they’re different from any other cats, and they’ll prove it daily with zoomies, curiosity, and plenty of love.

Fig, the darker gray beauty with one working eye, is the “hunter” of the pair—pouncing on toys, scouting out treats, and always keeping an eye (literally) on her surroundings. She’s also the velcro cat of the duo: a snuggler who wants to be as close to you as possible—on your lap, by your feet, behind your head on the chair, or tucked next to you in bed. She’s a little rounder than her sister thanks to her love for dry food and her past as a mama cat, but she’s full of purrs and affection and wears her curves proudly.

Vanilla, with her soft, mostly white coat and no eyesight at all, is the gentler soul—but don’t be fooled by her lack of vision. She’s a surprisingly fearless explorer, moving through her environment with cautious grace. Her quiet bravery is nothing short of inspiring—she’ll slowly map out a room, take a mental note of everything, and then zoom through it when she’s ready (especially if wet food is involved!). It may take her longer to bond, but once she does, she’ll sit beside you, lean into your leg, and silently “watch” your every move in her own intuitive way.

These two are independent at times and cuddly at others. You’ll often find them curled up together, but they’re just as comfortable doing their own thing. What unites them most—aside from their deep sisterly bond—is their shared love of food. Shake the treat bag or crack open a can, and you’ll be met with a chorus of excited meows — Fig sounding like a cat, and Vanilla sounding suspiciously like a tiny person yelling.

Despite their visual impairments, they play like any other cats. They chase, pounce, roll, and wrestle with each other and with their toys — completely unfazed by their one-eyed status. They’re also litter box champs and scratch where they’re supposed to.

Fig and Vanilla are looking for a home that sees beyond sight — someone who will appreciate their quirks, respect their different paces in bonding, and spoil them with love (and snacks).

They must be adopted together and will bring double the heart, double the charm, and double the joy to the right person or family.

More about this rescue

Our rescue group was formed in December 2007, but all our Board Members have had extensive experience rescuing and working with abandoned animals. We often work with other rescue organizations to find appropriate and safe foster and adoptive homes for our pet clients. We regularly go to areas with abandoned animals and collect them. The animals are taken to a licensed veterinarian examined, treated and spayed or neutered. Every effort is made to work with the animal and our foster and adoptive families to find a suitable forever home.

For those animals who are truly wild and feral, we release the animal in a safe and secure location after it has recovered from its medical treatment. We also work with certified wildlife rehabilitators to rescue injured and orphaned wildlife. Our organization is focused on improving the welfare of the abandoned animals in need of help in Brooklyn. In furthering that goal, our resources are focused on the animals.

Aside from a few minimal overhead costs such as our website and phone services, our entire budget is spent on animal care such as medical and food costs.
