Dog Name: Mighty Moose
Breed: pitbull terrier mix
Sex: male
Age: 1
Weight: 70
Medical Needs: none
Housebroken: yes! he stands at the door and huffs and puffs when he wants to go out
Crate trained: yes! he goes in willingly with a treat and settles immediately. Doesn’t make a peep unless he needs to go potty or pushes his toy out and needs help getting it back. He will whimper for a bit if this happens and then accepts his fate and lays down. He sleeps all night in there without a single sound
Good in the car: yes! he does occasionally try to get up front and for that reason I suggest a seatbelt or crate to keep him contained to one area. If he has people in the back with him, he’s totally fine. He enjoys resting his chin on the door with his nose just barely out the window.
Good on a leash: yes! but needs a prong and a confident handler as he is very strong. He has learned how the prong works and rarely tests his limits. He knows it’s required for his walks and will sit by the front door excited yet patiently waiting for me to put it on him. He knows the prong is used when we are doing fun stuff like walks, jogs, car rides and various outings so he looks forward to it since it has never been used in a negative way
Energy level: medium with occasional zoomies and then he crashes harder than the 2008 housing market
Need a fenced in yard: not required but would need a couple of good walks daily to get some energy burned off. We walk 4 miles daily (2 in the am and 2 in the pm) and he huffs and puffs the last half mile each and every time, but he doesn’t give up
Dog Friendly: Moose has been friendly with most dogs he’s met, but has proven to be slightly selective. He’s done well with all dogs he’s met while out and about at events. At home, he’s been great with his female foster sister (they’re quite literally inseparable) and female resident dogs, but recently has had several fights with the resident male dog so it is our recommendation that he not go to a home with other male dogs
If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? no
Cat Friendly? yes! he learns quickly if he gets hissed at or swatted
Kid Friendly: yes!
If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? any age with proper supervision. Moose has been around a bunch of kiddos from newborns to 17 year olds and he's been a total rockstar. He loves to get up in the grill of toddlers - I mean, they're eye-to-eye, so why not? He's all about those sloppy, wet kisses and has accidentally knocked a few tiny humans over because, well, he's a giant. in his mind, he's a 7-pound lap dog, not a 70-pound behemoth
Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Moose came to grass roots from a high kill shelter in nc. He was in horrible shape when he arrived and needed some serious TLC. He was legit knocking on deaths door. He was clueless on how to be a dog, had no idea how to walk on a leash or climb steps. He would inhale his food so fast as if it were his last meal. Fast forward 2.5 months and he’s gained 20 pounds, plays hard and loves even harder. He is so gentle and such a love bug. He’s a fast learner and is food motivated, aren’t we all?! He knows how to wait to be served his food. And if you have a laser pointer, you can keep him entertained and moving for quite some time
