Dog Name: Nelson Tarboro
Breed: Hound
Sex: Male
Age: 5
Weight: 65lbs
Medical Needs: Heartworm recheck in April
Housebroken: Yes
Crate trained: Yes, though he likes to whine softly to make you feel bad about it
Good in the car: Yes
Good on a leash: He's a hound - that nose controls him. He does well with a prong.
Energy level: Medium; he's pretty lazy in the house but likes to gallump about outside
Need a fenced in yard: No, so long as you're committed to containing his sniffing, wanderlust ways
Dog Friendly: Yes, but he is EXTREMELY enthusiastic about meeting dogs smaller than him, which can be overwhelming for them, so careful introductions are highly recommended.
If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No, he'd be more than happy to just lean on you
Cat Friendly? No
Kid Friendly: Yes
If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? 6+ and sturdy; he's not always the most aware of his surroundings and might accidentally knock a kid over in his quest to uncover the best sniffs
Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? This is Nelson Tarboro. He is a hound. He does Hound Things - like singing the song of his ancestors. He also has that hound stubbornness, and is not a dog you can try and push your will on in order to make him submit and obey you. Working with Nelson will be equals-or-nothing while you build that trust; when someone he didn't know tried to pressure him into a command, the situation ended in a bite. He doesn’t respond well to forceful or overly authoritative training styles, and will immediately go on the defensive. When given the time to adjust and become comfortable, this big oaf is just happy to be with you whenever you go, be that around the house or out on a sniffari walk. With him being, y'know, a hound, that nose of his is excellent at sniffing out snacks. Because of that, keeping a close eye on him in the beginning will ensure he does not liberate your counters of whatever tasty delights they hold. Like bread. Daily life with Nelson is a lot of laughing at him trying to out-holler a nearby siren, reminding him that inside voices do, in fact, exist, and asking oneself why, of all the beasts out there, you've chosen hounds as a breed you love with your whole heart. And then he'll do something like lean all his weight on you, rest his chin on your shoulder, and fall asleep like there's nowhere else he'd rather be. If you know, you know.
